Gunfire erupted in the southern Beirut suburb of al-Rowais on Friday after the army arrested the brother of the head of al-Meqdad family association.

“The gunfire in al-Rowais erupted over the army’s arrest of Hasan al-Meqdad, the brother of Maher al-Meqdad,” al-Jadeed television reported.

Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour announced Friday that he “will not support a camp against another” during his chairmanship of the current session of the Arab League, saying he does not care about the domestic “overbidding” in this regard.

“Lebanon will not enter the mazes of Arab politics and will not support a camp against another,” Mansour said in an interview with NBN television.

Lebanon has absorbed tens of thousands of refugees fleeing from the conflict in neighboring Syria in recent months and many of them are living in overcrowded conditions, suffering psychological distress, fearful for their safety and unable to afford medical care, said the international medical humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in a report released Friday.

“Most refugees are settling in low socioeconomic regions of Lebanon, placing an additional burden on already overstretched resources. Gaps are appearing in refugees’ access to medical care, particularly hospital-level care and treatment for chronic diseases,” MSF said.

Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague on Friday urged the European Union to place the military branch of Hizbullah on its list of "terrorist" organizations.

"I would like to see the EU designate and sanction the military wing of Hizbullah," Hague said in response to a question on arriving for talks with his EU counterparts.

An explosive device was found on Friday near a liquor store in southern Lebanon, reported the Central News Agency.

It said that the bomb, located in the town of Qaaqaiyat al-Jisr, was not prepared to be detonated.

Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel warned on Friday of forces in the Arab world that may seek to impose new dictatorships in the region.

He noted the existence of “dormant dictator cells” in the Arab world that are being protected by totalitarian regimes.

An arrest warrant was issued on Friday against a Major on charges of smuggling weapons to Syria, reported al-Manar television.

It said that the charges were made against Major Wissam Abdul Khaliq and that it remains unclear if he is a member of the army or any other security agency.

Tensions were high in the hometown of slain Sunni Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Wahed in light of the release of three officers linked to the cleric's death in May.

Mustaqbal bloc MP Khaled al-Daher slammed the decision to release the officers, deeming its a “suspicious decision aimed at creating tensions in Lebanon ahead of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Lebanon.”

Hizbullah MP Mohammed Raad lashed out at the March 14 alliance over its memorandum over the Syrian violations, accusing the coalition of covering up its participation in the aggression against Syria.

“The March 14 memo is incitement against Damascus and directly targets it,” Raad said in a press conference at the parliament.
