Members of the UK Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee (FAC) headed by Chair Rt Hon Dame Emily Thornberry MP, visited Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday to assess the humanitarian, political and security challenges facing the country and the wider region. The delegation included MPs Alan Gemmell, Abtisam Mohamed and Edward Morello.

The visit focused on the devastating impact of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah on civilians in Lebanon, the situation facing Syrian refugees and host communities, and efforts to support the Lebanese Armed Forces and Lebanon’s long-term stability and security.

A Lebanese military delegation refused Wednesday to take a commemorative photo with an Israeli delegation as they met in Washington.

A military source told LBCI that the delegation took into consideration the feelings of the Lebanese people who lost their homes and loved ones in the war.

The Lebanese-Israeli negotiations are at a standstill at both the military and political levels, MTV reported on Thursday.

An Israeli strike on a vehicle in southern Lebanon killed two people on Wednesday, Lebanese state media reported, with militant group Hezbollah calling it another "violation" of a truce between the two sides.

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said that "two people were killed" when an Israeli drone targeted their vehicle near the town of Kfar Rumman.

MP Hassan Fadlallah, a member of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc, has pointed out that "there are Israeli violations of the ceasefire, and there are attacks and attempts by the enemy to evade the agreement to which it was bound by the Iranian-American memorandum of understanding, because it did not want to adhere to this agreement."

"However, the resistance knows how to deal with this matter, and the brothers concerned know how to confront it and what the directions are in this regard," Fadlallah added.

Ashoura comes as many of the more than one million displaced Lebanese people are trying to return to their villages in southern Lebanon. Cities and towns had held sermons and events in the buildup to the holy day surrounded by buildings reduced to rubble and ruins.

Ashoura, a holy day symbolizing sacrifice and martyrdom, holds special significance for many this year in Iran and Lebanon.

U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa, who is taking part in the Lenanon-Israel talks in Washington, has said that "the Israeli withdrawal will happen sooner or later, but not tomorrow."

The Israeli military said Thursday that a soldier was killed the previous day in southern Lebanon, where clashes with Hezbollah militants have been reported despite a ceasefire.

Master Sergeant Basil Sweid, 32, a driver, "fell during operational activity", the military said.

Lebanon and Israel have agreed to extend the ceasefire after concluding a second day of direct negotiations in Washington, sources told Al-Arabiya on Wednesday.

"An agreement has been reached on creating military 'pilot zones' in south Lebanon," the sources added, referring to south Lebanon areas from which the Israeli army would withdraw ahead of the Lebanese Army's deployment in them.

The Israeli military said it carried out an airstrike targeting suspected Hezbollah militants who crossed into the so-called "security zone" it has created in southern Lebanon, the second such incident it reported within hours on Wednesday.
