Salam's National Interest Government: No Monopoly on Portfolios

Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam's priority for a "national interest government" blocks the appointment of ministers who are planning to run in the parliamentary elections and prevents a portfolio from being monopolized by a single sect, officials close to Salam said Sunday.

The officials told An Nahar newspaper that the PM-designate's priority is to set the shape and identity of the new cabinet.

Speaker Nabih Berri will call for a parliamentary session on Tuesday to amend the deadlines set by the 1960 electoral law, An Nahar newspaper said Sunday.

The daily said that a meeting of parliament’s bureau on Monday will lead to setting a legislative session for the next day to amend some of the articles hours before PM-designate Tammam Salam begins two days of consultations with parliamentary blocs to form his new government.

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi on Saturday hoped that the new cabinet will be formed “quickly”, stressing on the importance of reaching consensus over a “just electoral law”.

One Man Killed in Armed Dispute in Tripoli

A man was killed and another injured in an armed dispute in the northern city of Tripoli on Saturday between residents from Bab al-Tabbaneh and others from al-Badawi region.

The state-run National News Agency reported that Walid Bakri was killed in the dispute in al-Malloula road while Omar al-Arja sustained serious injuries and was transferred to the Islamic Hospital in the northern city.
