The Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces prevented anti-Assad demonstrators on Sunday from reaching the border with Syria during a protest at the Masnaa border crossing in the Bekaa valley.

An Nahar daily said Monday that the demonstration was called for by Hizb ut-Tahrir in support of the Syrian people protesting the Assad regime’s crackdown.

The cabinet is not willing to allow Energy Minister Jebran Bassil to spend $1.2 billion on an electricity project without having control on the funds, An Nahar daily reported Monday.

The controversial project will be discussed at a ministerial meeting held at the Grand Serail on Monday afternoon, a day before a cabinet session to be held at Baabda palace.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati is waiting for the results of the investigation carried out by the general prosecutor’s office on the TIME magazine interview to take the appropriate action, his sources said Monday.

In remarks to several newspapers, the sources said that Miqati is hoping the probe would unveil the true story behind the controversial interview with one of the four suspects in ex-Premier Rafik Hariri’s Feb. 2005 assassination.

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon has no comment at the moment on the alleged interview with one of the Hariri murder suspects recently published by the TIME magazine, STL official spokesman Marten Youssef said Sunday.

"The Lebanese authorities know where I live, and if they wanted to arrest me they would have done it a long time ago," the suspect, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Time magazine. "Simply, they cannot."

Hussein Oneissi, one of the suspects accused by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon of being involved in the assassination of former Premier Rafik Hariri, was likely the suspect interviewed by TIME Magazine, reported the daily An Nahar on Sunday.

Sources told the daily that the meeting probably took place last Tuesday or Wednesday in the presence of a non-Lebanese Arabic interpreter.

Syrian President Bashar Assad may seek to create unrest in Lebanon after the West called on the president to step down, western diplomatic sources told the Kuwaiti al-Anbaa newspaper in remarks published on Sunday.

They explained that Assad has now lost his “most important strategic card”, which is the regional, Arab, and international support.

Hizbullah said on Saturday that Al-Mustaqbal movement leader Saad Hariri had rushed with his conclusions on the Time interview with one of the four suspects named in the Special Tribunal for Lebanon indictment.

“Hariri hastened, as his usual habit and the habit of officials (affiliated in his party), to claim the content of the fabricated and false interview in the Time magazine,” a statement issued by Hizbullah’s media department said.

Hizbullah denied on Saturday that the Time magazine had interviewed one of the suspects named in the indictment issued by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon probing the assassination of ex-Premier Rafiq Hariri.

Hizbullah’s media department issued a statement saying “the Time magazine reporter claimed that he met a high-ranking source from Hizbullah, then found himself introduced to the suspect.”

Former Prime Miniser Saad Hariri slammed Hizbullah and the cabinet over the TIME magazine interview with one of the four suspects named in the Special Tribunal for Lebanon indictment.

Hariri’s press office issued a statement on Saturday saying that “Hizbullah considers that the State, its institutions, its government and its security and judiciary forces are only tools to protect Hizbullah… and to cover up their violations and abuses against Lebanon and the Lebanese.”

Head of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon Defense office Francois Roux will task a lawyers for each suspect named in the indictment to examine the charges against them, the Central News Agency reported on Saturday.

“Each lawyer will head a team to build a case to defend the suspects and examine the indictment and the charges formed against them,” informed sources told the news agency.
