Report: Miqati Didn't Hand in Resignation, But Voiced Readiness to Step down in Favor of New Govt.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati did not present his resignation in light of the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Wissam al-Hasan, reported Al-Joumhouria newspaper Monday.

It said that the premier did not speak of resigning to President Michel Suleiman or the cabinet.

Former prime minister Saad Hariri on Sunday received phone calls from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon, who offered him condolences on the assassination of Maj. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan and his bodyguard Ahmed Suhyouni.

“During the phone calls, discussions also tackled the developments which Lebanon is witnessing after the heinous assassination. (Ex-)Premier Hariri stressed that the Lebanese people are staging a civil, democratic movement to overthrow the government of Premier Najib Miqati, adding that March 14 forces will boycott the government until it falls, as it is the product of the Syrian-Iranian axis and is working to achieve the interests and influence of this axis at the expense of the interests and security of Lebanon and its people,” Hariri's office said in a statement.

Geagea: Our Struggle Won't Stop before Formation of Sovereign, Patriotic Govt.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea on Sunday called for the formation of a “sovereign, truly patriotic government,” stressing that the “struggle” of the March 14 forces will not stop before the departure of Prime Minister Najib Miqati's government.

“Today, we laid to rest martyr Wissam al-Hasan and all the martyrs but we reject to even think of bidding farewell to another figure once again,” Geagea said in a televised address.

Several people were injured as security forces used tear gas on Sunday to repel demonstrators trying to storm the Grand Serail, the headquarters of the Lebanese government in downtown Beirut, amid calls for Prime Minister Najib Miqati to resign.

Following the funeral nearby of slain Maj. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan, chief of the Internal Security Forces' Intelligence Bureau, "young people headed towards the building in the city center, but security forces blocked them by firing into the air and using tear gas," a policeman on the scene told Agence France Presse.

France Says Syria 'Likely' Involved in al-Hasan Assassination

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Sunday that Syria was probably involved in the Ashrafiyeh car bombing that killed Intelligence Bureau chief Maj. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan and at least three other people.

"It is likely... Everything indicates that this is an extension of the Syrian tragedy," Fabius told French television, accusing Syrian President Bashar Assad of spreading his country's conflict beyond its borders.

Aoun: Some Parties Turning al-Hasan Assassination into Political Battle

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun on Sunday accused "some parties" of turning the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau chief Maj. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan into a "political battle," warning that violence "would facilitate the mission of those plotting against Lebanon."

"Maj. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan is the martyr of the entire country, not only the martyr of his security institution," Aoun said at a press conference in Rabiyeh.
