Reports: Qatar intends to activate its presidential mediation

Qatar intends to activate the contacts over Lebanon’s presidential election file, media reports have said.

An informed political source told Lebanon’s ad-Diyar newspaper, in remarks published Sunday, that the activation of the contacts will come after Doha succeeds in its mediation between Hamas and Israel, which will see the release of a batch of Israeli hostages in return for the release of Palestinian prisoners and the supply of Gaza with fuel and aid.

Report: Cabinet won't discuss army chief file next week

The issue of the looming vacuum in the army chief post is still the subject of intensive contacts and efforts but no progress has been made in this regard, which has forced the postponement of a Cabinet session that was supposed to be held Monday, a media report said on Sunday.

“The concentrated attempts to find a solution or exit for this crisis have not succeeded until the moment,” a ministerial source told ad-Diyar newspaper, stressing that Cabinet will not convene on Monday as had been previously reported.

New day, new round of skirmishes on Lebanon-Israel border

Six missiles were fired Sunday from south Lebanon at Israel's northern Galilee region as an airstrike targeted Lebanon’s Aita al-Shaab and artillery shells hit at least 12 Lebanese southern border towns.

Israel’s Channel 12 said the missiles fell in an open area in the Shlomi settlement and that no casualties were reported.

It is very likely that a Cabinet session will be held on Monday with the aim of extending the term of Army chief General Joseph Aoun and the probable appointment of a new chief of staff, informed sources told al-Joumhouria newspaper in remarks published Saturday.

The Free Patriotic Movement has meanwhile “rejected participation in Monday’s session, stressing that the appointment of a new army chief, chief of staff and military council should take place through roaming decrees signed by all ministers, not through a Cabinet session, expressing concerns that (General Joseph Aoun’s) retirement could be postponed regardless of the defense minister’s approval,” the al-Liwaa daily reported.

Israel strikes deep in south, Hezbollah downs drone as clashes continue

An Israeli drone fired two missiles at dawn Saturday at an aluminum factory on the Toul-Kfour road in south Lebanon, targeting the heart of the Nabatieh governorate for the first time since the 2006 war, the National News Agency said.

The strike fully burned the factory and its equipment, NNA added.

Geagea says Bassil behavior shameful, FPM accuses him of being a foreign agent

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea on Friday alleged that Free Patriotic Movement chief Jebran Bassil is “doing the impossible and crossing all red lines and constitutional limits” in order to “get rid of General Joseph Aoun in the army chief post for purely personal and opportunist considerations.”

“According to the available information, he is working night and day to appoint a new army commander. Despite our respect for all the candidates proposed for this post, he has totally disregarded everything that he had stated in terms of rejecting the ministerial decrees that have been issued over the past year because they encroach on the president’s jurisdiction,” Geagea said.

Berri rejects attacks on al-Rahi as Hezbollah visits Bkirki
