Anti-IS Assaults Gain Ground in Iraq and Syria

Iraqi forces advanced in west Mosul and fighters in Syria seized a key supply route to Raqa on Monday as twin US-backed offensives gained ground against the Islamic State group.

Supported by the US-led anti-IS coalition, Iraqi government forces and a Kurdish-Arab alliance in Syria are battling to push the jihadists from Mosul and Raqa, the last two major urban centers under their control.

Two Islamists Killed East of Algiers

Two armed Islamists were killed in an army operation east of the Algerian capital on Monday, the defense ministry said.

It said the militants were gunned down in Dellys, 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Algiers. Two other Islamists were captured and two Kalashnikovs and two automatic guns seized.

US-Backed Forces Cut Key Supply Route to IS-Held Raqa

US-backed forces in Syria have cut a key supply route between the Islamic State group's stronghold Raqa and their territory in Deir Ezzor province, a monitoring group said on Monday.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, cut off the route with air support from the US-led anti-IS coalition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Fifth Night of Suspected US Raids on Yemen

Yemen was hit by a fifth consecutive night of suspected US air strikes targeting al-Qaida members in the impoverished nation, a Yemeni security source said Monday.

The source said the early dawn raid hit the town of Al-Nasl in the southern Abyan province, which has been the target of air strikes as well as an al-Qaida attack on the army in recent days.

A Palestinian was killed in an exchange of fire with Israeli troops in the West Bank city of Ramallah, the Israeli army said Monday.

The man, whom Israeli police named as 31-year-old Bassel al-Aaraj, opened fire at soldiers who came to arrest him at his home Sunday night and was shot dead.
