13 Killed, 32 Wounded in North Baghdad Explosion

A car bomb exploded in a crowded street in a city north of the Iraqi capital on Saturday, killing 13 people and wounding 32, police and a doctor said.

The dead included seven women and a six-year-old child, the doctor said.

Russian Photographer Abducted by Syrian Rebels

A Russian photographer has been abducted by a group of Syrian rebels who accuse him of being a spy, the Russian foreign ministry said Saturday.

Konstantin Zhuravlev is being held by the Islamist group Liwa al-Tawhid, said foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich, adding that he was seized in Syria's second city Aleppo.

Tunisian Forces Clash with Jihadists

Tunisian security forces and suspected jihadists have clashed near Mount Chaambi, a stronghold near the Algerian border of militants linked to al-Qaida, a security source said Saturday.

"The clash took place last night (Friday) as an anti-terrorist brigade moved in to arrest jihadists at Karma" in the Kasserine area, the source told Agence France Presse.

Three arrested over Iraqi Kurdistan attack

The authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan have arrested three men allegedly involved in an attack that killed seven people last month in the autonomous region's capital Arbil, officials said on Saturday.

"We were able to arrest... terrorists who have a direct relationship with the terrorist operation that targeted Arbil," the region's national security adviser, Masrur Barzani, told a news conference near Arbil.

Damascus Mortar Fire Kills 'at Least 4 Civilians'

At least four civilians including a child were killed Saturday as mortar rounds slammed into central Damascus and a suburb of Syria's capital, a monitoring group and state media said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least three people died when several rounds hit Jaramana, a mainly Christian suburb that is considered pro-regime.

Thousands Rally for South Yemen Independence

Thousands of separatists took to the streets Saturday on the anniversary of the 1967 independence of former South Yemen, but deadly gunfire among the activists marred the rally.

The demonstrators came from across the south and gathered on Parade Square in the center of Aden, waving flags of the former South Yemen and carrying banners bearing pro-independence slogans.

Zawahiri Blames Moderate Islamists for Egypt, Tunisia Setbacks

Al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri on Friday said moderate Islamists in Egypt and Tunisia were in part responsible for their recent political setbacks, accusing them of having been too conciliatory.

A 16-minute audiotape of Zawahiri released on jihadist forums focused on his native Egypt, where he said military-backed authorities were waging war on Islam at the behest of Israel and the United States.

Libya PM Calls His Abduction a 'Coup' Attempt

Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan said Friday that his abduction for several hours the previous day by former rebels was an attempted coup.

At least 12 migrants drowned and 116 were rescued on Friday when their boat capsized off the coast near Egypt's second city Alexandria, a security official said.

Naval vessels were searching for more survivors, the official said, adding that those on board had left Egypt illegally.

U.N. Leader Says Nobel Win Proof of Chemical Arms Threat

U.N. leader Ban Ki-moon said Friday that the Nobel Peace Prize award to the global chemical weapons watchdog highlights the everlasting threat from the banned arms.

"This recognition occurs nearly 100 years after the first chemical attack -- and 50 days after the appalling use of chemical weapons in Syria. Far from being a relic of the past, chemical weapons remain a clear and present danger," Ban said in a tribute to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
