WikiLeaks said Thursday it was publishing over two million emails from Syrian political figures dating back to 2006 but also covering the period of the crackdown on dissent by Syria's regime.

"Just now... WikiLeaks began publishing the Syria files, more than two million emails from Syrian political figures, ministries and associated companies dating from August 2006 to March 2012," said Sarah Harrison, spokeswoman for the anti-secrecy website.

Tunisia on Thursday called for an urgent meeting of the Arab League and an international probe into the 2004 death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat over suggestions that he might have been poisoned.

"We call for an urgent meeting of Arab League foreign ministers and the creation of an international committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death" of Arafat, Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem told private radio station Mosaique FM.

The chief U.N. military observer in Syria, Major General Robert Mood, said on Thursday that he is opposed to his 300-strong team being armed.

"I've made it quite clear, from my point of view, that to give a small observer force weapons is not a good option," Mood told a press conference in the Syrian capital.

A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit southern Israel on Thursday, causing no injuries or damage, an Israeli police spokesman told Agence France Presse.

"The rocket hit a field in the Eshkol region and caused no injuries or damage," Micky Rosenfeld said.

Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui confirmed on Thursday that the breakdown in internet services in Lebanon is due to a malfunctioning IMEWE cable in Alexandria in Egypt.

“We’re working on transferring the services to the cable in Cyprus,” Sehnaoui told LBC TV.

Syrians must be able to decide their own fate free of impositions by other countries, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said, according to a statement posted on his official website on Thursday.

Gunmen have shot dead a Syrian general and two other senior officers in a day of violence that resulted in nearly 100 deaths across the country, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Thursday.

The general was killed on Wednesday on the road from Damascus to the Druze region of Suweida in the south, and a colonel was murdered in the central province of Hama.

The ruler of the Gulf state of Kuwait on Thursday asked outgoing Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak al-Sabah to form a new cabinet, the official KUNA news agency reported citing a decree.

Sheikh Jaber, a senior member of the ruling al-Sabah family, resigned last week days after the constitutional court nullified February legislative polls, scrapping the opposition-controlled parliament.

Israel will resume construction of its controversial West Bank barrier within the next few weeks after a five-year delay, public radio reported on Thursday, citing an army officer.

Israeli radio reported that Colonel Ofer Hindi, the officer responsible for the barrier, delivered details of the plans to resume construction work in a session before the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Two Kuwaiti liberal groups called on Wednesday for key reforms including legalizing political parties and establishing an electoral commission as a prelude to adopting a full parliamentary system.

The Kuwait Democratic Forum and National Democratic Alliance, which have six MPs in the 50-member parliament, said such reforms are essential to resolve lingering political disputes in the oil-rich Gulf state.
