Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea lauded Wednesday a statement by President Joseph Aoun in which he reiterated his commitment to disarm Hezbollah and implement the state's monopoly on arms.

Geagea said Aoun's words were "clear and responsible" and hoped that all political forces would unite behind the President's plan. "Perhaps and hopefully, we may reach, as soon as possible, the actual State that Lebanese people have long dreamed of."

Israel and the U.S. are trying to suspend a committee monitoring the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel and are instead asking Lebanon to accept "extremely difficult" conditions, the head of Lebanon's delegation to the committee said.

Lebanese diplomat and lawyer Simon Karam told journalists Tuesday that the American-Israeli decision and continuous pressure to obstruct the committee's work are "pushing things toward the unknown" and that Lebanon cannot agree to the extremely difficult conditions that Israel is demanding.

Two people were killed Wednesday in two separate Israeli airstrikes on their vehicles on the Bazouriyeh and al-Zahrani roads, in the southern districts of Tyre and Sidon.

The Israeli army said it targeted two Hezbollah members in the strikes.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Tuesday that he has discussed with the United Nations the enhancement of humanitarian aid to Lebanon.

Salam was at the annual meeting of The World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alps town of Davos, among 3,000 participants from 130 countries.

President Joseph Aoun stressed Tuesday in a press conference his commitment to disarm Hezbollah and implement the state's monopoly on arms.

"We want the south only under the army's control," Aoun said, as he welcomed foreign diplomats and ambassadors at the Baabda palace. "We want to rebuild all what has been destroyed as a result of attacks and adventures."

To Saudi Arabia, it is important that the Lebanese decisions come from the Lebanese state, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said.

Berri seemed satisfied about a meeting he had with Saudi envoy Prince Yazeed bin Farhan. He told Assas news portal, in remarks published Tuesday, that his meeting last week with bin Farhan was "excellent."

A man was wounded in an overnight Israeli strike on the southern town of Zebqine, the health ministry said Tuesday.

The strike comes as Israel intensified its attacks on Lebanon, despite a ceasefire reached in November 2024, a week after the Lebanese army said it had completed disarming Hezbollah south of the Litani River.

Israeli airstrikes targeted Monday Wadi Burghoz, Ansar's outskirts, al-Mahmoudiyeh, and al-Mourouj, with the Israeli army claiming it struck Hezbollah targets in south Lebanon.

"A short while ago, the (Israeli military) struck terror infrastructure in several areas of southern Lebanon... used by Hezbollah to conduct drills and training for terrorists" to attack Israeli forces and civilians, the military said in a statement.

Families of the Beirut port blast victims protested Monday the appointment of Gracia Azzi as the Director General of Customs in front of her office at the Beirut port.

Azzi was summoned for questioning by Judge Tarek Bitar in relation to the 2020 Beirut Port explosion.

Army chief Rodolphe Haykal will visit Washington from February 3 to 5, media reports said.

Haykal will present to Washington detailed military maps, and a list of Hezbollah sites and tunnels, local TV network MTV said.
