Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan will on Sunday host the country's team who won the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Nigeria beat Mexico 3-0 in Friday's final in Abu Dhabi to win a record fourth U17 World Cup after they previously triumphed in 1985, 1993 and 2007.

Nigeria President Seeks State of Emergency Extension

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan asked lawmakers on Wednesday to extend a state of emergency declared in the northeast in May for an additional six months, saying the Islamist insurgency had not yet been contained.

Jonathan imposed the emergency measures in the states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, areas where he said Boko Haram insurgents had seized territory and chased out local officials, threatening Nigeria's sovereignty.

Gunmen Shoot Dead Four Family Members in Nigeria

Gunmen on Tuesday attacked a village in central Nigeria, killing four members of a family, an army spokesman and a community leader said.

"Four members of a family were killed in Rantis village of Gashes District in Barkin Ladi local government area" of Plateau state, army Captain Salisu Ibrahim Mustapha, of the Joint Task Force, told reporters.

Nigeria Army Says Killed Seven Suspected Islamists in Northeast

Nigeria's army said Tuesday it had shot dead seven suspected Boko Haram fighters during a raid in a northeastern area where the Islamist rebels have killed dozens in the last week.

U.N.: Nigeria's Boko Haram Could be War Criminals

Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamists could be classed as war criminals, the United Nations human rights office said Tuesday, as it condemned a bloody attack on a wedding convoy.

"Members of Boko Haram and other groups and entities, if judged to have committed widespread or systematic attacks against a civilian population ... (could be) guilty of crimes against humanity," said Cecile Pouilly, spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Four Dead, 25 Hurt in Nigeria Building Collapse

Four people were killed and 25 others injured when a four-story building under construction in an upscale area of Nigeria's economic capital Lagos collapsed, the head of the city's emergency services said Tuesday.

"A twin four-storey duplex in Victoria Island collapsed on Monday. We brought out four dead bodies while 25 others with injuries were rescued by our team," Femi Oke-Osayintolu, of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), told Agence France Presse.

Boko Haram Kill 27, Torch 300 Homes in Nigeria

Dozens of Boko Haram gunmen riding on motorcycles and in pickup trucks stormed a town in Nigeria's restive northeast, killing 27 people and razing some 300 homes, a local official said Monday.

"Gunmen numbering about 70 riding on about 15 motorcycles and hilux (trucks) attacked the village late Thursday," said Baba Shehu, an official with the local government in Bama, an area repeatedly attacked by the insurgents.

Boko Haram Video Claims October 24 Attack that Killed 35

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said in a video released Sunday that he led an October 24 attack in which 35 people found in military uniform were killed in the Nigerian city of Damaturu.

"Look at what happened in Damaturu (capital of northeastern Yobe state)," the head of the Islamist group said in the video obtained by Agence France Presse through the same intermediary as previous clips. "Since we killed them with our hands -- in fact I was the commander of the operation -- so, you cannot say I'm making conjecture."

Gunmen Kill More than 30 in Attack on Nigeria Wedding Convoy

Gunmen have attacked a wedding convoy in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, killing more than 30 people including the groom in a suspected ambush, witnesses and survivors said Sunday.

The attack took place Saturday on the notorious Bama-Banki road when the wedding revelers, including friends and relatives of the groom, were returning to the state capital Maiduguri after the ceremony in Michika, in nearby Adamawa State, they said.

Official: 17 Killed in Nigerian Church Stampede

Seventeen people were killed and dozens of others injured on Saturday in a stampede following the end of an overnight church vigil in eastern Nigeria, a government spokesman said.

"We have visited the hospital in Nkpor and found 17 corpses that were brought in from the scene of the disaster," spokesman Mike Udah told Agence France Presse.
