England striker Jermain Defoe is to return to the Premier League after signing for Sunderland from FC Toronto, with Jozy Altidore heading to Canada as part of a swap deal, it was announced Friday.

Former Tottenham Hotspur favorite Defoe, 32, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Black Cats in a move that sees United States international Altidore return to North America.

Fernando Torres failed to end his four-month Premier League goal drought but the striker could at least claim an assist for Frank Lampard's flukey goal that gave Chelsea a narrow 1-0 victory over Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.

The Spain striker sent an acrobatic volley crashing against the bar before the ball found its way into the net off the knee of Lampard in the 13th minute.

Liverpool sealed the signing of Newcastle defender Jose Enrique on Friday with the Spaniard describing the transfer as "one of the happiest days of my life".

Enrique joins Liverpool on a long-term deal after the Reds paid Newcastle a reported transfer fee of £5.5 million (6.3 million euros).
