The army clashed with a number of gunmen on Wednesday evening as it carried out raids in the Tripoli neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh, after arresting three people and raiding an arms and explosives depot during the day.

“Clashes erupted between the army and gunmen in Bab al-Tabbaneh amid raids in Khan al-Askar," OTV reported.

An officer and a soldier were martyred on Tuesday evening as their patrol came under fire in the northern Akkar plains.

The shooting also wounded another soldier.

The implementation of a security plan by the Lebanese army in the northern city of Tripoli faced on Tuesday attacks and protests by angry men.

The state-run National News Agency said several grenades were tossed in the area of al-Baraniyeh as residents shortly blocked the road of al-Dabagha and wheat market with burning tires.

The Lebanese army on Monday arrested two suspects and seized weapons during raids in several neighborhoods of the northern city of Tripoli as part of a security plan aimed at bringing stability to the country.

The military said in a communique that soldiers raided two arms depot in the impoverished neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen and the area of al-Baraniyeh.

Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq has held onto a security plan as officials said security agencies would seek to arrest more than 50 people whose names are on a list of wanted suspects in the eastern Bekaa Valley.

In remarks to al-Mustaqbal daily published on Monday, al-Mashnouq said: “There is no going back on the security plan and there is no hesitation.”

The army kicked off on Saturday preliminary measures to begin implementing in the northern and central Bekaa a security plan similar to the one executed in the northern city of Tripoli, reported the daily An Nahar on Sunday.

It said that the army's removal of Hizbullah checkpoints between the regions of Baalbek and al-Hermel and in Arsal is the first sign of the implementation of the plan.

Army troops on Saturday carried out raids in several neighborhoods in the northern city of Tripoli, as part of the security plan which implementation kicked off on Tuesday to restore calm and stability in the North.

"Troops raided the Hara Barranieh and Souq al-Qamh regions in Tripoli,” radio Voice of Lebanon (93.3) said.

A woman, who was abducted in the northern city of Tripoli, was released on Saturday in unknown circumstances.

State-run National News Agency reported that 43-year-old Sawsan Abdul Haq, who hails from the town of Hayzouq in the northern region of Akkar and been kidnapped on Friday while en route to Tripoli, was transferred to the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau in the northern city.

A woman who hails from the northern region of Akkar has been kidnapped while en route to the coastal city of Tripoli, state-run National News Agency reported on Friday.

"Sawsan Abdul Haq, 43, who hails from the town of Hayzouq in Akkar, was abducted Thursday afternoon while on her way to the al-Rahma Dispensary in Tripoli's Bab al-Tabbaneh,” NNA said.
