Strong quake, small tsunamis hit southern Japan with minor damage

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 shook southern Japan on Thursday but no major damage was reported and only relatively minor tsunami waves lashed the coast.

The quake hit at 4:42 pm (0742 GMT) off Kyushu at a depth of 25 kilometers (16 miles), the United States Geological Survey said.

Russia says still fighting Ukraine units in Kursk border region

Russian troops were Thursday still fighting Ukrainian units in the Kursk border region more than 48 hours after Kyiv mounted a major cross-border attack, the Russian defense ministry said.

It said soldiers "continue to destroy armed Ukrainian army units" with air strikes, rockets and artillery fire targeting troops that have entered two border districts.

Nobel laureate Yunus arrives in Bangladesh to take over as interim leader

Bangladesh's next leader Muhammad Yunus arrived home Thursday from an overseas trip and will take office later in the day, as he looks to restore calm and rebuild the country following an uprising that ended the 15-year, increasingly autocratic rule of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Yunus landed at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday afternoon and was welcomed by the country's military chief, Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman, who was flanked by navy and air force heads.

UK police prepare for another night of violence as country reels from disorder

British police are gearing up for another night of violence amid concerns that far-right groups plan to target as many as 30 locations around the United Kingdom on Wednesday following a week of rioting and disorder.

Authorities are mobilizing about 6,000 specially trained officers to respond to disorder throughout the U.K., and London's Metropolitan Police Service said it would do "everything in our power" to protect the capital.

Putin says Ukraine carrying out 'provocation' in border region

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Ukraine was carrying out a "large-scale provocation" in the border region of Kursk, where the Russian army was battling Ukrainian fighters for a second day.

"As you know, the Kyiv regime has undertaken another large-scale provocation," Putin said in a televised meeting with government officials. "It is firing indiscriminately from various types of weapons, including rockets, at civilian buildings, residential houses and ambulances."

Yunus urges Bangladeshis to 'be calm and get ready to build the country'

Bangladesh's Muhammad Yunus, who is set to lead an interim government after the premier was ousted, called for calm and urged people to use the opportunity to build a better nation.
