thanking syria for ending the war and creating a period of stability in Lebanon is one thing (especially when those who invited Syria in the first place were the first ones to spit on it after they left) claiming obedience is something else. those videos with convenient (and ever-changing) translations really damage your brain.

of course israel wants bachar out, they announced the regime change a few years ago. yes there is no "bullet fired from the golan" as many keep repeating, but without bachar, hezbollah is cut from iran, and supply of weapons becomes near impossible. bachar did not renounce his support for hezbollah, and now they are trying to make him pay for it.
the US cannot afford to launch an open war in syria as long as russia and china categorically oppose it, it's not the UN keeping them back, they own the UN.
and finally, as you recalled, the CIA, through bin laden, didnt hesitate arming & financing the taliban. these fanatical groups were cheap, docile and effective in fulfilling US goals, the US didnt need more. and it turned out they won the cold war for the them
