iran did not massacre and syria is in a civil war where some elements in the population are receiving arms, funding, and technical support from foreign enemy countries. it is a very simplistic, and misguided, view to say the gov is killing his own people as many of the massacre victims (such as houla for instance, which made a big noise) were alawis and probably killed by rebels. when the identity of the victims became known, western medias did not make the same noise.
on the other side of the coin, america killed two million iraqis for oil, killed tens of thousands of afghans, and support a racist colonial land-stealing enterprise fueled by extremist religious ideology ("promised land" my ***).
they have the upper hand on media and propaganda, and always find a way to make "their" side look innocent while dehumanizing and justifying the wide-scale destruction, chaos and death that they spread.

Regarding Syria, the extremists were there from the start. From the first days in Deraa 7 policemen killed and official buildings torched. what kind of "peaceful protesters" can organize that sort of attacks within a day or two?
