That's wrong justice, after the false flag attack in eastern Ghouta and the US beating the war drums, the Russians dispatched several warships in the Mediterranean between the Syrian coast and the US fleet.
There are even reports of two ballistic missiles being intercepted by Russia. (The US claimed at the time that these were part of a training exercise with israel, that just somehow took place at the very peak of the crisis & right above the place where the US and Russian fleets were facing off)

There was also the (deliberately) leaked message from Putin to Assad giving him the green light to strike saudi oil fields with ballistic missiles should the US attack.
