Movie Review: Machete Kills (2013)

I'm a big fan of 2010's "Machete"; it was a completely ridiculous and over-the-top B-movie from director Robert Rodriguez, and it was a total blast. When the movie ended with a teaser for the sequels "Machete Kills", and "Machete Kills Again", I thought it was just a joke…until now. But do we really need a sequel to Machete? My answer: Why not?

Danny Trejo is back as the Mexican you do not want to fuck with, and he’s joined by a bevy of big names that have been very cleverly cast. Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas, Cuba Gooding Jr, Lady Gaga, and Charlie Sheen (or Carlos Estevez) are in the movie, just to name a few, and they all seem to be having a blast with the crazy material. I'd tell you a bit about the story, but there's no point.

"Machete Kills" has understandably lost some of the original’s luster given that the novelty factor is gone, but it’s still goofy and funny enough to check out if you enjoyed the first one. The violence is crazy (they come up with the best intestine-related deaths), the dialogue is cheesy as hell (in a good way), and it's just great to see Danny Trejo being a badass.

I do think that the movie could have been about 15 minutes shorter, and like I said, it’s not as fresh as the first film, but I don’t think that this is an unnecessary sequel. Machete is an awesome character who deserves to be explored further, whether that’s in movies, a cartoon show or comics remains to be seen, but he has a lot of potential.

Anthony's Verdict:

Let’s just say that if they do make "Machete Kills Again", I’ll be there.

Numerical Score: 6.5/10
