Movie Review: Bad Grandpa (2013)
Written by Anthony Sargon
Johnny Knoxville goes solo in the latest chapter of the “Jackass” saga as Irving Zisman, everyone’s favorite perverted and foul-mouthed 86-yeard-old. But how does the character fare in his first feature-length film? Can Irving Zisman really sustain his own movie? The answer is yes, yes he can.
The movie blends scripted and non-scripted events featuring unsuspecting individuals, not unlike what we saw in “Borat”. The story itself revolves Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville), an 86-year-old man tasked with driving his grandson Billy (Jackson Nicoll) cross-country to be reunited with his deadbeat dad.
The movie is extremely funny, and although the scripted parts fall a bit flat, they won’t stop you from laughing out loud at everything else that happens. Knoxville is great as Zisman, and the entire team has come up with some truly fucked up ways to mess with people. Jackson Nicoll is also excellent as Billy, and surprisingly manages to keep a straight face throughout the entire thing, which couldn't have been easy to do.
But like I said, whenever someone isn’t being pranked, things will slow down a little bit, at least until the next dick joke. I guess a minor plot was necessary to give the pranks some context, but I really feel like the movie could have done without it.
Anthony’s Verdict:
“Bad Grandpa” delivers plenty of laugh out loud moments. If you’re anything like me and enjoy the “Jackass” brand of humor, you shouldn't miss it.
Numerical Score: 7.5/10
