At least two people were injured when a U.N. vehicle hit a mine in the restive north of Mali on Wednesday, a military source told Agence France Presse.

"The car belonged to Medecins du Monde-Belgium. It hit a mine next to the airfield at Kidal. There were at least two injured, both Malians," said the African military source, who was not authorized to give her name.

"We searched the area to see if any mines had been placed on the airfield," she added.

A local police source confirmed the incident.

Kidal remains a hotbed of rebellion more than a year after a French-led military intervention largely drove out al-Qaida-linked Islamist rebels from northern Mali.

More than 1,500 km (930 miles) from the capital Bamako, Kidal is also a key center for the Tuareg, whose rebellion set off a major crisis for the country in 2012 and 2013.
