Cedarcom Says Fair Competition Key to Internet Success

Cedarcom, the alternative Broadband Wireless Data Provider in Lebanon, has unveiled on its blog the problems and solutions for a fast internet access with fair prices.

In an article posted on its blog, Cedarcom suggested a way for having fast internet in Lebanon by upholding “fair competition among operators while promoting investment in the telecom sector leading to sustainable innovation.”

“Like most industries, telecommunications is driven by competition – a mixture of factors based on price, quality, and service,” it said.

“Globally, the telecom industry is becoming more and more deregulated to create competition and innovation by reducing or limiting government power over the sector to a “regulatory role” — unlike in Lebanon where the government polices and plays the role of regulator, supplier, and competitor,” the company continued.

Cedarcom stated that the key to growth and competitiveness of the economy is through “liberalizing the telecom sector,” which would “attract investment, lead to the development of high-tech services, and create high value added jobs.”

“We keep calling for fair competition in Lebanon because it doesn’t exist,” it said, adding that “fair competition means all operators are given an equal opportunity to compete and offer services or solutions to the consumer.”

Cedarcom urged Telecom Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui to “to break the mold and shape the way for the future and implement fair competition,” adding that “fair competition in the telecom sector in Lebanon is crucial for the economy, innovations, and consumer satisfaction.”

Cedarcom SAL was established in 1997 with the objective of providing state-of-the-art interconnectivity solutions to the corporate industry in Lebanon. Even though Cedarcom SAL obtained its license in 1997, it was not until May 2004 that it started its operations in beta phase (after its acquisition by the Group) and launched commercial services in September 2004 using pre-WiMAX technology. Since then, it has an estimated market share of more than 33% in Data Sector (more than 26% in the Fixed Broadband Wireless Access sector and more than 38% of the Mobile Broadband Wireless Access sector).
