Shooting at Canada New Year's Party Kills One, Injures Six

Seven people were shot at a New Year's party in the Canadian city of Calgary, including one victim who has died of his wounds, news reports said Friday.

The shooters were not among the victims, and police said they fled the scene after they opened fire. 

"Apparently the offenders left in a vehicle," a police source told Agence France Presse. 

It is not clear how many shooters there were or why gunfire erupted at the party. 

Police received several calls at 5:05 am (1205 GMT) Thursday reporting gunfire at the private party, where some 50 people had gathered. 

Emergency workers took five people to the hospital, including two with life-threatening injuries. 

"Two others wounded went on their own to the hospital," police said, adding that they were not considered suspects.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) later reported that one shooting victim had died.

Photos on social media showed the streets around the house where the shooting occurred sealed off with police tape.  

Calgary in western Canada is home to about one million people. 

It was the second mass shooting in Canada in the past several days, after a man suffering from depression killed eight people in the city of Alberta late Monday into Tuesday, before committing suicide.
