Two Road Accidents Kill 22 in Russia

More than 20 people were killed and dozens injured in road accidents in two separate Russian regions, authorities said Wednesday.

Eleven people were killed and 28 injured in a bus accident Wednesday outside the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, the regional police force said in a statement.

"Police are elucidating the circumstances surrounding the traffic accident in the Kozulsky district, where a bus collided with a truck," the statement said.

Details of the accident, which occurred 70 kilometers (44 miles) west of Krasnoyarsk, remain sketchy.

The regional governor has ordered a day of mourning, his office said.

Another deadly road accident in Russia's North Caucasus region of Chechnya Tuesday evening also claimed the lives of 11 people and seriously injured six others, the Chechen government said.

A minivan taxi traveling through Chechnya's mountainous terrain from the neighboring republic of Dagestan plunged off a 300-meter cliff, killing 11 of the 17 people on board.

Russia has a dismal road safety record, due mainly to poor roads and reckless driving. In 2014, nearly 27,000 people died in traffic accidents.
