Wozniacki Cleared for Australian Open Tennis

World number one Caroline Wozniacki will be fit for next week's Australian Open after a wrist injury threatened her participation in the season-opening grand slam, WTA officials said Thursday.

Denmark's Wozniacki was troubled by an injury to her left wrist as she went down to Polish world number eight Agnieszka Radwanska, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Sydney International late Wednesday.

Wozniacki was unsure over the extent of her injury after losing to Radwanska, but scans Thursday cleared her of major problems ahead of the year's opening slam in Melbourne, which starts on Monday.

"Caroline had a MRI scan this morning and it proved clear," a WTA spokesperson said.

"It is inflamed and she has been told to ice the wrist and rest it and she expects to play in the Australian Open."

Wozniacki said she experienced pain from her wrist during the third set of her match with Radwanska.

Petra Kvitova could have taken the number one ranking by winning the Sydney tournament, but Wozniacki said she was unfazed by the threat to her top spot.

"To be honest, I don't think about it (losing top ranking)," Wozniacki said. "The most important thing is to be healthy and be able play and play well. What happens happens. It doesn't matter."

Wozniacki, whose 65 weeks at the top of the women's singles rankings comes without winning a grand slam in 19 attempts, was taken to a third set by Radwanska after she was broken at 5-4 serving for the match in the second set.
