260 Civilians Killed in Homs 'Massacre' Ahead of U.N. Vote

Syria's army randomly bombarded the protest hub of Homs early on Saturday, killing at least 260 civilians in one of the "most horrific massacres" in the country's uprising, an opposition group said.

In a statement, the Syrian National Council also called on the world to act, and demanded that Russia change its position, condemn President Bashar Assad's regime and allow democracy.

"In the early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 4, 2012, the Assad regime committed one of the most horrific massacres since the beginning of the uprising in Syria" in March last year, said the SNC.

"Assad forces randomly bombed residential areas in Homs, including Khaldiyeh and Qusur, which resulted in at least 260 civilians killed and hundreds of wounded, including men, women, and children.

"The Syrian National Council calls on everyone around the world to speak up and do something to stop the bloodshed of innocent Syrians," it said in the statement.

"The SNC demands that Russia change its position regarding the Syrian regime's massacres.

"The SNC also demands that Russia clearly condemn the regime and hold it responsible for the massacres, to stop the killing in Syria, and allow Syrians to democratically elect a regime that ensures freedom and dignity for all Syrians," it concluded.

News of the latest deaths came as a diplomat in New York said members of the U.N. Security Council would meet Saturday morning for a vote on a resolution condemning the violent repression in Syria.

The text is the same as a draft resolution sent to the council's 15 members on Thursday.

It highlights the U.N. body's support for an Arab League plan for a democratic transition while leaving out explicit references to calls for Assad to step down, the diplomat said Friday.

The resolution faces an uncertain fate, as Moscow had maintained its opposition to a tougher draft resolution authored by Western powers and the Arab League.

The Security Council has yet to adopt a resolution on Syria despite the 10 months of violence that has left more than 6,000 people dead, rights groups estimate. An earlier draft was blocked in October by China and Russia.

jabal how many children and innocent syrians did you kill?

Missing helicopter 04 February 2012, 09:04

While I understand where mansour is coming from, I disagree with his comment. I understand the harrowing crimes the syrian regime committed in Lebanon for over 30 years. But I can not blame the Syrian people for it (many of them are also victims of the same regime). I wish the syrian people freedom, liberty, and prosperity. I wish for neighborly and friendly relations based on mutual respect and interests. The more they suffer the more radical they become and that will affect us in Lebanon. Look what 30 years of conflict in Lebanon produced (Mafias, radicals, za3ran) and most of it was because of a backward dictatorship in Syria. A democratic and healthy Syria will have positive effects on Lebanon. Peace on earth and glory to God. Kullona lel-watan.

if you are understanding them to know they are talking to you, that means you are a worm like them, logic...but don't answer them, just answer the numbers of children that died with the bombardment, were they terrorists too? Bashar you will burn in hell...

I only blame Gabby, peace, thepatriot, shab, aragon, allouchi and mantouchi because they have been predicting the fall of the Assad regime since too long a time. And now this! 260,418 killed IN ONE DAY in Homs, which brings the total number of killed to 1,814,374 since the unstoppable drive to topple the Assad regime and end the game began 11 months ago. But the undercover work to topple the Assad regime actually began since the beginning of time by these folks' great great grandparents who could not survive to see the glorious day when the Assad regime falls. But they left it to these folks and to their successors and their successors' successors. If these folks could just stop giving the Assad regime more grace periods and end this ritual before it gets transmitted to their successors!!!

We are already hearing reports of direct shelling of Syrian villages by Hezb from Hermil, looks like Hezb wants to bring the war here & it probably thinks it can succeed in knocking out both oppositions. Their arrogance will kill them.

Not one of these Assad cheerleaders can explain why if Israel is the true enemy, why hasn't the Syrian army fired a single shot in its direction in 30 years.

Default-user-icon Beiruti (Guest) 04 February 2012, 16:03

Russian excuses are that they want to preserve Assad in power because he purchases a lot of Russian made weapons and it is good for Russian foreign trade to keep Assad in place.

In light of the massacre of innocents in Syria, this Russian excuse shows the depravity and the inhumanity to which the world has dipped in 2012. Profits from the sale of armaments take priority over crimes against humanity.

We are well past the point where those who continue to make excuses for the Assad Regime should be tainted with the blood that is on his hands as accomplices to his mass murderous regime. Hezbollah - Iran - Russia - Venezuela these are now as guilty of the murder of Syrians as is Assad because they have the ability to stop the murders and not only do they refrain, but obstruct others who might come to the aid of the heroic Syrian people.

Default-user-icon assadhole (Guest) 04 February 2012, 16:23

Assad knows by now that it's over for him.I don't get why he won't just step down and call for a cease fire and instead he keeps killing his own people. What a filthy backwards thinking regime.

@ Cookie, whether it is true or false of whats happening in Syria, whether there are armed gangs or not, We cannot abandon the fact that there is a real movement of free people that dont want Assad anymore as well.

From a lebanese perspective, maybe you forgot the 30 years of raping Lebanon's economy and other, you say they are out? ok since they are out, can they clearly admit at the UN that they want to demarcate borders with Leb? Never did so. Also, explain to the family of prisoners that their sons who fought with Aoun , they will never see them again.

Default-user-icon Skyfall (Guest) 04 February 2012, 20:44

@ Cookie, tell me, wasnt this the reason why Aoun went and got the red carpet in Syria? he went supposedly also to try to find out and bring back the lebanese prisoners from Syrian jails. what happened? did he forget his soldiers by saying at the end to their families that there is no one there?
You will tell me Israel, well i though " Ashraf el nass " was handling the swaps with the Zionists, or are they just good at bringing back killers of small girls and rapist like this druze pig they brought back last time from Israel and made a big deal out of it? ( not to say how much he gave information on the hezb to the ennemy )

Default-user-icon Skyfall (Guest) 04 February 2012, 20:48

@ Cookie , you better start waking up , and become a man of valor , not a Aounie sheep, you cannot be neutral as i read on one of your answers to others , true, but you can also be on a side which realises that we have 2 ENNEMIES : ISRAEL AND SYRIA. And this will always be like that unless both are completly changed. Syria still thinks it own Lebanon and thanks to people like SSNP and your master that allows them to have ministerial posts, they still have control. As for Israel, with hezb on the border, they are so happy no palestinian scum goes throwing rockets randomly at them. What is Hezb waiting for to liberate Shebaa eh ? they have now the full support of governement because THEY ARE the governement. Come on im with you go bring back our lands. Or maybe it isnt Israel they want, its Lebanon....

Default-user-icon Skyfall (Guest) 04 February 2012, 20:51

@ Cookie , Anyway when you will grow up to understand that even if we , the christians that are against Israel, cannot even fight next to a chiite, because Hezb is closed on to a sect, and doesnt include other sects as resistant to Israel. Go try to be a militia man for them and help them. They wont accept you. Its MOUKAWAMA el ISLAMIYA. But we all know Aounist people converted to Chiism , so maybe you can . Put up your CV in a Sukleen truck, anyway it will arrive to Ashraf el Nass via LIBAN-SEWERS POST ;)

Default-user-icon Pablo (Guest) 04 February 2012, 20:52

Definitely should be cause for a military invasion to topple the regime. Just like they did in Iraq with Saddam, and Libya with Muammar. Spread democracy when and where it is deserved, not just where it counts.
