Armed "terrorist" groups on Wednesday attacked the oil refinery in Syria's embattled central city of Homs, setting two storage tanks ablaze, state television reported.

"Armed terrorist groups shelled the refinery in Homs, setting two fuel depots on fire," the television said, adding later that the fire had been brought under control.

The installation is one of Syria's two main oil refineries, the other being in the coastal town of Banias, to the northwest.

There have been numerous attacks targeting the country's oil infrastructure since the popular unrest sweeping Syria first erupted in last March.

The authorities frequently blame armed "terrorist" groups, while opposition activists have accused the regime of involvement in the attacks.

Rights activists earlier reported that Syrian forces pressed a relentless assault on Homs on Wednesday for a fifth straight day, with dozens of civilians killed in a barrage of gunfire, mortars and shells.
