Municipal elections to begin on May 4

The upcoming municipal elections will be held in four phases starting May 4, Interior Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar said on Tuesday.

“Preparations are underway at all levels and, God willing, they will be finalized soon,” Hajjar added.

He also said that he is in contact with the governors of the South and Nabatieh governorates regarding how elections will be conducted in southern border towns witnessing major destruction.

The minister had told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper that “the government is determined to carry out this juncture according to the highest standards of transparency, integrity and democracy.”

“As for holding the elections in the destroyed border villages and towns, we are preparing a study that includes an appropriate solution,” he added.
