Assad on Army Day: Syria Military Engaged in 'Crucial Battle'

The Syrian army is engaged in a "crucial and heroic battle," President Bashar Assad said Wednesday in a speech published by official media agency SANA on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the army.

"The army is engaged in a crucial and heroic battle... on which the destiny of the nation and its people rests. The enemy is among us today, using agents to destabilize the country, the security of its citizens... and continues to exhaust our economic and scientific resources," he said.

"They (the enemy) wanted to deprive the people of their national decision... but they were astonished to see these proud people, who confronted their plans and defeated them," said Assad.

"You men of the country... you have demonstrated, in dealing with the war waged against our country by the terrorist gangs, that you possess an iron will and a keen awareness."

"Our military remains the backbone of the motherland," Assad said.

Damascus does not recognize the popular revolt that erupted in March 2011, describing opposition activists and rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) alike as "armed terrorist groups" financed by foreigner powers and sent to sow chaos.

Assad's speech comes as clashes escalate in a number of areas including Aleppo, where the FSA on Tuesday announced that it had captured three police stations in the heart of the country's commercial capital.

A Damascus security source said the offensive, which the army launched on Saturday to recapture rebel-held areas, looked likely to last for "several weeks."

man just save us the hassle and quit. You are an awful president. Just go your masters in Russia or China. there you will have mentality like yours that wants to subjugate everybody. there you would learn how to say yes all the times to your masters. Just to give you a taste of your own medicine that you gave us for decades in Lebanon.

there will be many disappointed Wahhabis who were betting on Assad's downfall. Bandar bin Sultan, the chief terrorist, has already been killed by the Syrians. The rest of these FSA Wahhabi Al Qaeda pests will also be cleaned from Syria pretty soon.

The opposition who is trying to overthrow the regime are the Ikhwan and Salafists. If they take over Syria (which I still doubt)then you have the Ikhwan in Syria and Egypt, and then Jordan will be next (and then the Gulf states). The Ikhwan are more anti Israel (America) then the Baath regime. The Ikhwan will most likely ally themselves with HA because they strongly supported the July 2006 war against Israel and the military strength of HA can be of use to them. Like in Lebanese politics , former "enemies" become allies. For those M14 Christians who are cheering Assad's downfall...be careful what you wish for.
