Russia Seriously Concerned over Aleppo Violence

Russia expressed serious concern Friday over attempts by Syrian rebels to gain control of Aleppo and condemned foreign nations for providing the armed opposition with military supplies.

The foreign ministry said the latest evidence from Syria's second city showed that "illegal armed formations" were trying to make Aleppo into a base for future attacks on Syrian President Bashar Assad's troops.

"Moscow is very worried by the dangerous development in the situation, the violence and provocations aimed at expanding the scope and the cruelty in the civil war," the ministry said in a statement.

It added that Russian officials were receiving reports of foreign nations supplying the rebels with portable surface-to-air missile launchers "that can be used against civilian targets."

It also pointed to the recent broadcast of a video purportedly showing the execution of a pro-regime family by opposition fighters as evidence of grave crimes being committed by those fighting Assad.

"Assistance and support for the armed opposition contradict the U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria and Kofi Annan's plan," Russia said, referring to U.N.-Arab League former envoy's failed six-point plan initiative.

Annan announced his resignation from the job on Thursday in a move that dealt a blow to Russia's efforts to shield its Soviet-era ally from more forceful action from Western and Arab states.

Russia had defended Annan's initiative as the only way for a negotiated solution to the 17-month conflict and insisted on the extension of a U.N. observers mission in Syria that remains suspended amid the violence today.

Moscow on Friday stressed the need for finding a quick replacement for Annan and said the U.N. mission should have a future role to play in monitoring the situation in Aleppo and at other sites.

i wonder why they dont voice concern over the fact that this so called opporsiton is commiting war crimes and western nations are just simply looking away and even arming them even further. this just shows that this oppostion does not want a working goverment, this shows that they will be just as bad and maybe even worse . if the world really wants this to end they will stop supplying the rebels with guns and force them to begin negotiations.

Bla-bla. I;m not going to thumb you down, but you deserve one. You need to understand there isn't one united FSA, there are many clans that work independently. killing the shabi7a agents are al-berri tribe traitors is definitely unacceptable, but what can be done about it? Those people killed their children, and families... I understand them.

Bakkeer Vladimir. The worst is that I do believe they are actually concerned... but personal interests come first for them. Human nature...

FERO,i wonder why you don t voice concern over the fact that this so called goverment has committed in lebanon and in Syria war crimes.Russia and China just simply looking away and even arming the criminal bashar el assad, this just shows that bashar does not want any reforms. The oposition and as bad as they are cannot be as bad as the criminal bashar el assad ,we have experienced him and his criminal father before (crimes is in their DNA).
If the world really wants this to end ,they will stop supplying the criminal bashar with weapons, lock him up and whoever supporting him ,such as yourself and not negociating with him.you canno negociate with a thug.
