France on Thursday said a Syrian attack on Turkey which killed five civilians was a serious threat to global security and peace and called for an immediate halt to such strikes.

"This violation of international law constitutes a serious threat to global security and peace," Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a statement.

"The international community cannot accept that the Syrian regime continues with such acts of violence on its territory and outside its borders," he said.

Syrian shells hit the Turkish town of Akcakale on Wednesday, killing five civilians, including a mother and her three children.

Turkey on Thursday resumed cross-border shelling on Syrian positions in retaliatory action.

Fabius said France was on Turkey's side and appealed to "the international community, especially the U.N. Security Council, to quickly send out a strong message of condemnation" to Damascus.
