Movie Review: Evil Dead (2013)

When a movie promises to be the most terrifying film you'll ever see, there's a certain level of expectation that comes with it. While "Evil Dead" doesn't reach its lofty goals, it's still an incredibly satisfying horror remake that can stand on its own just as well.

The story follows five people who head to a remote cabin in an attempt to help their heroine addicted friend Mia (Jane Levy) kick the habit. Once they arrive, they stumble upon a book containing some passages that are probably better left unread, when, surprise! Someone reads the passages, unleashing terrible demons that vow to possess and kill everyone.

A remake of Sam Raimi's 1981 cult favorite "The Evil Dead", this version has almost none of the camp and silliness of the original's, though it does make up for that with buckets of blood. This is an extremely violent and graphic movie that'll have you looking away from the screen more than once, and it can get pretty intense. Director Fede Alvarez comes up with clever ways to make us cringe, and he succeeds on multiple occasions.

The film has great production values and looks like a million bucks from start to finish. It's shot very tastefully, which is refreshing to see in a horror movie. There are a lot of visual nods to the original, which is something fans are sure to appreciate. The performances also work well enough, with Jane Levy being the standout as Mia. It's a very demanding role, and she handles it amazingly well.

The film does have some issues, mainly being that it's just not that scary. It's extremely violent and difficult to watch, yes, but not very scary. And if you recently watched "The Cabin in the Woods", good luck getting that movie out of you head after walking out of "Evil Dead".

Anthony's Verdict:

"Evil Dead" might not be the scariest movie ever made, but what it lacks in scares, it more than makes up for in blood and style. It's loads of fun, and most importantly, it lives up to the venerable series' legacy.

Numerical Score: 8/10

Very disappointed. They probably should have just re released the original. Would have been more exciting. I was very excited about seeing it knowing who was directing, but the story was changed, the hero most definetly didn't hold a candle to Campbell and a lot of good parts missing. It had a few jumpy spots, but mostly just gore. I guess if you never seen the original it may have been good.

I like this movie, it's a bit corny but still a good one.
