India on Tuesday expressed concern about the worsening violence in Syria, but said any action against President Bashar Assad's regime must be first authorized through the United Nations.
"The international legal norm against the use of chemical weapons anywhere and by anyone should not be breached. However, we would prefer to await the full results of the U.N. inspection," its foreign ministry said in a statement.
India was in favor of bringing the Syrian government and the opposition to the negotiating table, the statement added, urging all sides to abjure violence.
Among the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, Russia and China strongly oppose any military strike on Syria.
The United States and France are seeking to build support for military strikes against Damascus over allegations it used chemical weapons against its own people on August 21.
