Energy-related carbon dioxide pollution grew by 2 percent last year after declining several years in a row, a government report said Monday. The increase was largely due to a small boost in coal consumption by the electric power industry, according to the study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
American cars and factories spewed 5.38 billion tons of carbon dioxide in 2013, up from 5.27 billion in 2012, the report said. Carbon dioxide is the chief man-made global warming gas.

Inter Milan was held to a 1-1 draw at home to Chievo Verona in Serie A as an incorrectly disallowed goal saw its poor run continue on Monday.

After a while it grew monotonous: a steady stream of Golden Globe winners declaring surprise.
For the people behind Fox's detective comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," it was genuine but not so with the victory lap for "Breaking Bad," and its team didn't pretend otherwise.

The Golden Globes are typically Hollywood's bawdiest awards show — "a wonderful mess," said co-host Tina Fey of this year's bash. But in the end, after all the boozy banter — some of it bleeped for broadcast — the 1970s corruption tale "American Hustle" got a very serious push toward Oscar glory, picking up three major awards.
Benefiting the most from Sunday night's Globes as focus shifts to the Academy Awards, David O. Russell's con caper locked in best comedy, best actress (Amy Adams) and best supporting actress (Jennifer Lawrence).

Venus Williams was moving freely in her first-round match at the Australian Open, breezing through the first set and getting a look at another break in the second against a player who upset her sister here two years ago.
That's when things started to go wrong for her Monday, the first day of the season-opening major. The seven-time Grand Slam champion missed the break-point chance in the sixth game and then, after getting to 40-30 on serve in the ninth, inexplicably firing three consecutive double-faults to surrender a break and just about the set to No. 22-seeded Ekaterina Makarova.
