Sharapova Beats Kerber to Reach Porsche GP Final

Defending champion Maria Sharapova came from behind in the third set to beat Angelique Kerber 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 Saturday and earn a spot in the final of the Porsche Grand Prix.

The top-seeded Russian committed two consecutive double-faults to drop her serve at the start of the decisive set. But Sharapova won the last eight points and clinched the match when her third-seeded German opponent hit a backhand long. Sharapova had wasted a chance to serve out the match in the ninth game after taking a 5-3 lead.

Rebels Attack Sprawling Air Base in Northern Syria

Syrian rebels attacked a sprawling military air base in the country's northwest on Saturday, while in the south opposition forces assaulted a string of army checkpoints and positions, activists said.

The raids follow nearly two weeks of advances by Syrian troops, mostly in the suburbs of the capital, Damascus, and areas near the Lebanese border in the central province of Homs.

Woman, 80, Swallows Diamond at U.S. Charity Event

The idea behind the Tampa Women's Club charity event was simple. For $20, you could buy a flute of champagne and a chance to win a one-carat, $5,000 diamond.

Organizers of the Saturday event placed $10 cubic zirconia stones in the bottom of 399 of the 400 champagne glasses. The prized diamond, donated by Continental Wholesale Diamonds, was placed in the last.

Possible 9/11 Plane Landing Gear Part Found in New York

A rusted 5-foot-tall piece of landing gear believed to be from one of the hijacked planes destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks has been discovered near the World Trade Center wedged between a luxury apartment building and a mosque site that once prompted virulent national debate about Islam and free speech.

The twisted metal part, jammed in an 18-inch-wide sliver of open space between the buildings, has cables and levers on it and is about 17 inches wide and 4 feet long, New York Police Department Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Friday.

Inter Milan Fined for Racist Abuse of Adebayor

UEFA has fined Inter Milan 45,000 euros ($58,500) for its fans' racist abuse against Tottenham forward Emmanuel Adebayor during a Europa League match.

UEFA's sanction included charges over other crowd issues, including Inter's "insufficient organization" of the match, plus objects thrown and fireworks lit by fans.

Luis Suarez Won't Appeal 10-Match Ban for Biting

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez will serve a 10-match ban for biting an opponent during a Premier League game after deciding on Friday not to appeal one of English football's harshest sanctions for on-the-field misbehavior.

"I would like to explain to everybody that I decided to accept the ban because whilst 10 games is clearly greater than those bans given in past cases where players have actually been seriously injured," Suarez said in a statement on his personal website, "I acknowledge that my actions were not acceptable on the football pitch so I do not want to give the wrong impression to people by making an appeal."

Dutch Schools Color Orange for New King

More than a million Dutch school children are participating in the "King's Games" Friday, a day of sports and games as festivities get underway to celebrate of the accession of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander to the throne next week.

Willem-Alexander and his wife Princess Maxima formally opened the games in the eastern city of Enschede. In all, 65,000 primary schools around the country are expected to participate, and most of the rest that didn't sign up formally are still celebrating in some way. Kids are wearing orange T-shirts in honor of the royal family, the ruling House of Orange.
