Saudi Arabia Reports 1 More Death from MERS Virus

Saudi Arabia's health ministry says one more patient who contracted the potentially fatal Middle East virus related to SARS has died and that 14 new cases have been detected.

The ministry said on its website Sunday that a Saudi man in his 70s died in Riyadh. It says this brings to 112 the number of deaths from the virus in the kingdom since September 2012.

Acrobats Fall during U.S. Circus Stunt; Several Hurt

Authorities are trying to determine what caused a support frame to collapse during an aerial hair-hanging stunt during a U.S. circus performance, sending eight acrobats crashing to the ground.

Nine performers were seriously hurt during Sunday's performance by Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus in Rhode Island, including a dancer below. Several others suffered less serious injuries.

Panama Vice President Wins Presidential Election

Vice President Juan Carlos Varela was declared the victor of Panama's presidential election Sunday, thwarting an attempt by former ally President Ricardo Martinelli to extend his grip on power by electing a hand-picked successor.

With 60 percent of ballots counted, officials said Varela led with 39 percent of the votes, compared to 32 percent for former Housing Minister Jose Domingo Arias, the preferred choice of Martinelli. Juan Carlos Navarro, a former mayor of the capital, was in third in the seven-candidate field with 27 percent.

Egypt Militants Claim Responsibility for 2 Attacks

An Egyptian militant group has claimed responsibility for twin suicide bombings that killed three people and wounded eight on Friday in the southern Sinai Peninsula.

In a statement posted Sunday on militant websites, al-Qaida inspired group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis warned the Egyptian army "we will not rest until we achieve retribution for the blood and honor of the Muslims."
