Meta fined record $1.3 billion, ordered to stop sending European user data to US

The European Union slapped Meta with a record $1.3 billion privacy fine Monday and ordered it to stop transferring users personal information across the Atlantic by October, the latest salvo in a decadelong case sparked by U.S. cybersnooping fears.

The penalty of 1.2 billion euros is the biggest since the EU's strict data privacy regime took effect five years ago, surpassing Amazon's 746 million euro fine in 2021 for data protection violations.

Vatican confirms August trip by pope to Lisbon

Pope Francis will travel to Portugal for World Youth Day in the first week of August and include a stop at the popular Marian shrine in Fatima, the Vatican said Monday.

The Aug. 2-6 visit is longer than originally expected and covers almost the entire week of the big Catholic rally that St. John Paul II inaugurated to try to invigorate young people in their faith.

First-time filmmaker makes mark in Cannes competition with Senegalese drama

Most filmmakers in the Cannes Film Festival's top-rung competition lineup are well-known directors who have been around for decades. One dramatic exception this year is Ramata-Toulaye Sy, a French-Senegalese filmmaker whose first film, "Banel & Adama," landed among the 21 films competing for the Palme d'Or.

"It's only now that I realize that being in competition means being in a competition," Sy said, laughing, in an interview shortly after "Banel & Adama" premiered in Cannes. "Now that we're really in the middle of it, I realize there's a lot of passion going around."

'Fast X' speeds to No. 1; knocks 'Guardians 3' to 2nd

The 10th installment of the "Fast and Furious" franchise was off to the races this weekend, knocking "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" out of first place and easily claiming the No. 1 spot at the box office. Argentina to play Australia in China, visit Indonesia on Asian tour

World Cup champion Argentina will play Australia at the Workers' Stadium in Beijing and take on Indonesia during a two-game exhibition tour to Asia next month.

Argentina will play the Socceroos on June 15 in the Chinese capital. It'll be the first meeting between the teams since Lionel Messi and his Argentina lineup beat Australia 2-1 in the Round of 16 en route to winning the World Cup title last December in Qatar.

Fire kills 6, injures 7 in Abu Dhabi

A house fire in Abu Dhabi killed six people and injured seven on Monday, according to the civil defense authority in the United Arab Emirates.
