Israeli soldiers shot and wounded three Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday near the border security fence, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

The three were in moderate condition after the incident, which occurred near Beit Hanoun, Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told Agence France Presse.

A rocket fired from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip hit an open area in southern Israel late Saturday without causing damage or injuries, the army and police said.

"Another rocket hit Hof Ashkelon," the army said in a statement, while police said it caused no harm or damage.

The Gaza Strip's land border with Egypt reopened Saturday after a 50-day closure, but only for three days and then just for special cases, its Islamist rulers Hamas said.

Passage to Egypt will be limited to those seeking medical treatment, students going to their places of study, foreigners and in cases deemed as humanitarian, Hamas's interior ministry said.

Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas announced Wednesday that the blockaded territory's border with Egypt would open after a 50-day closure, telling Palestinians wishing to travel to present their passports.

Egypt has severely restricted access through the crossing in the border city of Rafah since July, when the army deposed Hamas's ally, President Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Israeli soldiers shot and moderately wounded two Palestinians in the Gaza Strip Friday as they approached the security fence on the border with the Jewish state, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

Spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told Agence France Presse the incident took place east of Jabaliya, which is in northern Gaza.

Israel is allow the resumption of diesel deliveries into Gaza on Sunday, a day after the territory's sole power plant stopped working due to a lack of fuel, officials said.

The defense ministry had on Thursday shut down the Kerem Shalom goods crossing into southern Gaza after militants there fired scores of rockets over the border, although no-one was injured.

The Gaza Strip's only power plant shut down Saturday due to a lack of fuel from Israel, which closed a goods crossing after militant rocket attacks, a Palestinian official said.

An Israeli official denied the claim, however, saying the lack of fuel was due to infighting between the Islamist Hamas movement ruling Gaza and the Western-backed Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.

A truce declared by Gaza militants appeared to be holding on Friday with the Israeli military reporting no fresh rocket fire during the night after two days of tit-for-tat violence.

"It's all quiet, there has been no fire overnight," an army spokesman told Agence France Presse at 8:00 am (0600 GMT).

Neither Israel, Gaza's Hamas rulers nor Islamic Jihad want to see the latest round of cross-border fighting escalate but each side seeks to consolidate political gains, analysts said Thursday.

"Most of the rockets fired (at Israel) by Islamic Jihad were aimed at uninhabited areas," said Adnan Abu Amr, a politics professor at Gaza's Ummah University.

Islamic Jihad militants in Gaza fired scores of rockets at southern Israel on Wednesday, causing no casualties but prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to warn of a tough response.

The escalation came just hours after British Prime Minister David Cameron arrived on his first official visit to the region since taking office in 2010.
