Israeli warplanes killed three top Hamas commanders in southern Gaza on Thursday, inflicting a heavy blow on the movement's armed wing after failing to kill its top military chief.

As the six-week war between Israel and Hamas raged on, leaving Egyptian mediated truce talks in tatters, warplanes pounded Gaza killing three members of the Islamist movement's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas will travel to Doha on Wednesday and hold talks the next day with the emir of Qatar and Hamas exiled leader Khaled Meshaal, the Palestinian ambassador in Qatar said.

Negotiators in Cairo were pushing Israel and the Palestinians to put a decisive end to weeks of bloodshed in Gaza Monday as the clock ticked down on another temporary truce.

As the death toll in the war-torn Gaza Strip pushed over 2,000, Egyptian negotiators were pressing both sides to reach agreement before a midnight (2100 GMT) deadline which will mark the end of a five-day truce.

Turkey's foreign minister on Friday met Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal in the Qatari capital Doha to help efforts to broker a ceasefire with Israel, a government official said.

Ahmet Davutoglu met Meshaal in Doha for "negotiations aimed at a fair ceasefire," the official told Agence France-Presse on condition of anonymity. "The talks are proceeding in a positive direction."

Turkey's foreign minister flew into Qatar Friday amid mounting U.S. calls on the two Western allies to use their influence with Palestinian movement Hamas to end the bloodshed around Gaza.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who has been spearheading Western efforts to end the Palestinian territory's deadliest violence since 2008-9, has repeatedly telephoned both Qatari and Turkish leaders in an effort to broker a truce.

The Israeli campaign against the Gaza Strip will play a major role in “reorganizing” the power of the resistance in Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, and the region, reported As Safir newspaper on Tuesday.

This was reflected in the telephone call between Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal on Monday, added the daily.

Hizbullah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah expressed solidarity on Monday with the Palestinian people, voicing support to Hamas.

In a phone call between Nasrallah and Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, the Hizbullah chief stressed that the Lebanese resistance stands by the intifada of the Palestinians.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called Sunday for an immediate session of the U.N. Security Council, as the Palestinian toll on the 13th day of Israel's Gaza offensive rose to 438. 

"I am calling for an urgent session tonight of the U.N. Security Council," he said in a televised speech from the Qatari capital Doha.

Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal discussed efforts for a truce in Gaza with the ruler of Kuwait, current chair of the Arab League, on Sunday, state media and a diplomatic source said.

The official KUNA news agency gave no details of the talks with Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
