Hundreds of people took to the streets Saturday in some Lebanese areas and in the country’s Palestinian refugee camps in celebration of Hamas’ unprecedented operation that has stunned Israel.

In the Bourj al-Barajneh camp south of Beirut, residents danced in the streets, while young men in the northern city of Tripoli distributed celebratory sweets to passersby in the streets.

Hezbollah congratulated Hamas Saturday, praising the Palestinian "heroic" and "victorious" infiltration into southern Israel.

In a statement, Hezbollah said it is following up with the Palestinian factions on the operation, and called on Israel to "draw lessons" from it.

Prisoners in the Zahle prison set their cells on fire, leaving three inmates dead and 16 others injured, according to a police statement.

Police said the fire started in several cells on the second floor in the main prison in the eastern city of Zahle after an apparent escape attempt. It said 19 prisoners suffered from smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital where three died later.

The Lebanese Army rescued more than 100 migrants after their boat developed technical problems in the Mediterranean off the coast of northern Lebanon, state-run National News Agency reported. No one was hurt in the incident.

The agency said the boat that was carrying 125 people, all of them Syrians except for one Lebanese, called for help after they faced problems while near the Palm Islands in Lebanese territorial waters. The boat was towed to the Lebanese port of Tripoli where some of the migrants received first aid, the agency added.

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was on Friday charged as part of an investigation into possible witness tampering, adding to his long list of legal woes, including over illegal campaign financing.

Following 30 hours of questioning over nearly four days, investigating magistrates decided they had grounds to charge Sarkozy with benefitting from witness tampering and conspiring to pervert the course of justice, a judiciary source told AFP.

French envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian will return soon to Lebanon and preparations are underway to ensure the success of his visit, media reports said.

Qatari envoy Jassem bin Fahad Al-Thani meanwhile told the Tajaddod bloc that Doha will continue its presidential initiative in a bid to reach an agreement over a “third candidate,” the Nidaa al-Watan newspaper reported on Friday.

No date has been set yet for Qatari State Minister Mohammed al-Khulaifi’s visit to Lebanon amid futile meetings in Beirut by Qatari envoy Jassem bin Fahad Al-Thani, media reports said.

Al-Thani “has met for a second time with Marada Movement chief Sueliman Franjieh, who was decisive in informing him that he will not withdraw his nomination and that he will continue in the presidential race with the support of a firm bloc consisting of 51 MPs,” the reports said.

Lebanon’s presidential vote may not take place anytime soon, a media report said on Friday.

“Western diplomats expect that there will not be a breakthrough prior to the U.S. (presidential) election, which will take place in around a year,” ad-Diyar newspaper reported.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has met in Abu Dhabi with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

During the meeting, Sheikh Mohamed expressed his wishes for Lebanon to “enjoy stability, security, and prosperity and achieve development that meets the aspirations of its people,” UAE’s state news agency WAM reported.

Army troops were deployed overnight around a sewing factory where a major clash erupted between Lebanese and Syrian men.

The clash erupted on Thursday night near the Saint Maron Church in Dora after a road accident between a motorcyclist and a woman driving an SUV. The woman called the owner of a sewing factory, who's apparently a friend or a sibling. When the fight broke out, the factory's Syrian workers rushed to help their boss, witnesses said.
