Suleiman, Miqati Support Charbel’s Proposal on Electoral Law

President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Miqati have voiced their support for Interior Minister Marwan Charbel’s proposal on the parliamentary electoral law, the minister told An Nahar in remarks published on Sunday.

Three Soldiers Wounded in Shooting in Tripoli

Three soldiers were wounded when unknown assailants opened fire Saturday night at an army checkpoint in the northern city of Tripoli, reported Voice of Lebanon radio on Sunday.

A security official told Agence France Presse that the shooting took place at a checkpoint located between the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

Canadian Farmer Released from Lebanese Prison

A Canadian potato farmer who was arrested in Lebanon a year ago has been released from prison in Beirut and is expected to arrive home on Saturday, officials said.

Henk Tepper, 44, one of Canada's largest potato growers, was arrested in Lebanon in March 2011 under an Interpol warrant for allegedly selling bad produce to Algeria.

Erdogan Hails al-Rahi’s Efforts to Preserve Stability in Lebanon

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan hailed the efforts exerted by Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi to Turkey to maintain stability in Lebanon, stressing that Turkey hasn’t witnessed a visit like this since the Ottoman empire.

Geagea Says Revolt in Syria Will Not End, Calls on Christians to Cling to their Land

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea called on Saturday the national community and Arab countries to sponsor a “sincere” referendum in Syria as “ending the revolution would be an illusion,” reiterating that safeguarding the Christians in the region isn’t by “throwing them in the hands of repressive regimes.”

“There will be many difficulties and obstacles ahead of us… but these difficulties will not deter us from reaching our goals,” Geagea said during a rally at Biel in Downtown Beirut.

Syrian authorities foiled an attempt by an “armed terrorist group” to infiltrate from Lebanon into Syria, Syria’s state-run news agency SANA said.

EDL Workers Suspend Strike

Workers of state-owned Electricite du Liban announced on Saturday the suspension of their open-ended strike after Energy Minister Jebran Bassil and Finance Minister Mohammed al-Safadi met their demands.

The syndicate of EDL workers thanked in a statement both Bassil and al-Safadi for approving the transfer of the necessary funds to pay the salaries of employees.
