Report: March 14 Discusses 'Bkirki List' over Presidential Election Crisis

The March 14 alliance leaders, who held a meeting at the Center House on Thursday night, revived discussions on a proposal to back a former minister to the presidency, sources said.

The coalition's sources told pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat that the March 14 officials are mulling whether the rival parties could agree on a consensual candidate from the so-called “Bkirki list.”

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi had proposed to name former Ministers Ziad Baourd, Demianos Kattar or Roger Deeb as consensual candidates over the differences between the March 8 and 14 camps on who should occupy the country's top Christian post.

The sources said that the discussions on the three figures were revived after the parliament failed on Thursday for the fifth time in a row to elect a new head of state, two days before President Michel Suleiman's six-year term expires.

Politicians have warned that a presidential vacuum would be a setback to the country's institutions and a blow to the Christians and mainly the Maronite sect.

According to the country's power-sharing system, the president must be a Maronite, the prime minister a Sunni and the speaker a Shiite.

Christian parties are now planning to boycott parliamentary sessions in response to the looming vacuum.

The March 14 alliance’s officials held a meeting at the Center House on Thursday night to assess Thursday’s session and the stage that would come after May 25.

This is Ayatollah's plan from the beginning. Obstruct democracy to force a "consensus" President.

The "consensus" President will not be allowed to speak against the Iranian terrorist militia and their illegal arms, or he will be attacked and shunned, like they did to Suleiman.

All thanks to the deserter ex-general who became a traitor and sided with the terrorists.

We see Syria issue court documents against jumblot. They are trying to intimidate him into voting for aoun as ha plan on nominating him in the coming weeks. I fear jumby now has a target on his back and a price on his head. This is the consensus aoun wants.

I am sure the M8 cheerleaders are very proud of this day.

Nothing will change, we will get a weak president and another 6 years of turmoil. Unless the constitution and election laws are changed no real change can take place. Any such change should cut Jumblatt to his real size and not allow him to play the trump card anymore.

The militia's plan is right on schedule... thank you General Aoun, you are gutless.

This is flat out extortion, Lebanon will have to accept a vacuum or a President that will bend to the militia's will.

We need politicians to follow the constitution and the laws.

Lawless country = mess.

How will the average guy follow traffic rules and wait in line when the top clowns wreak havoc on the highest law of the land every six years?

Winston Churchill once said of the Americans: "You can always count on them to do the right thing . . . after they have tried everything else."

If only the Lebanese Christian political class was this good! We have one, Aoun, who keeps trying everything else long after everyone knows that everything else is not only the wrong thing, but that it will not even work.
