Bassil Urges Cabinet to Adopt his Electricity Plan

Energy Minister Jebran Bassil said on Friday that the electricity draft law that he proposed before cabinet will save the citizens $730 to $1300 million.

“The result is due to the cheapness of the factories (that are intended to be built),”Bassil stated during a press conference.

He slammed the March 14-led opposition stance on the issue.

“They are blocking 700 Megawatts and depriving people 7 hours from electricity,” the Minister added.

Bassil noted that the opposition is obstructing his plans and stopping him from carrying out five key transmission lines and implementing around 30 electricity distribution projects.

“Those who are halting the electricity are halting it from people, and not the cabinet or a political movement,” he stressed.

The minister told the reporters that the government is facing “economic, developmental, and political challenges.”

He urged it “to take a decision on Tuesday to adopt the draft law and head to the parliament on Wednesday to thwart any attempt to block the project.”

“The parliamentary majority has to be ready to announce the lack of quorum,” Bassil stressed.

He had recently proposed a project to end the electricity crisis calling for the construction of 700 MW power plants and demanding $1.2 billion to fund the project.

However, lawmakers opposing the proposal argue that it would burden the treasury.

Tell this stupid buffoon to go sell crazy elswhere . We don't trust him nor do we trust his father in law who imposed this imposter on the Lebanese .
May they both rot in hell along with their evil plans .

Saving between 700 and 1300 million.......Huge gap in estimation....
Now I understand why no one trust the project except the contractors who will build the factories.......( we do not call electric companies factories )

I am against

Next please

I am March 14 supporter, but to be honest, the electricity in Lebanon is a shame... so if someone is trying to solve it, i am not going to stand against him...

Thumb shab 19 August 2011, 14:17

Cheap electricity plants running on what? Oil? Off course they are cheap nobody wants them.
Start to think for the future generations. If you want to make a difference think ahead instead of the presents and your pockets like all Lebanese.
Consider Solar power from our many hours of sunlight, wind power on mountain sides and by the sea, Hydroelectricity from our may rivers and waterfalls. Think ahead, think green, think zero emission, the nature is not a free dish,

Shab, my words exactly!

But a green concept is too 2000, we are still living in 1960.

Does Bassil have the technical ability, experience, knowledge, to dare impose such a huge expensive project? On what is he based? Where are his statistics, his studies, his extrapolations, the balances??? It is incredible.
Did he submit a technical report detailing all the sides of his project to a technical comitee for approval?
How can he assure that it is the best solution for the electricity problem?
Or mabe what matters ar the commissions he will take from the suppliers?
What a looser. Out you and your insane uncle.

Default-user-icon honest (Guest) 19 August 2011, 15:41

To go green you'll have to pay more. if only for this plan to pass the congress takes that hard, imagine a plan that is minimum twice the price????

As for the honestness of Bassil or some one else from the other party, just make the plan transparant, show the offer to the lebanese and tell them what they exactly are paying for. If not doing so and just trusting his nice brown ice, than i rather be stolen and having electricity than be stolen and not having electricity ;)

True Gebran M14 is trying to thwart your plan. How can anybody put a trust into a person that was parachuted on them by force to take up key positions in government and looking back at this person's background we seem he came from nothing to great riches!! Shouldn't somebody do a financial check on you Gebran and is there not a law that ministers should make a declaration about their wealth? We the lebanese people have major suspicions that you are a major crook trying by all means to rip us off in the same pattern that your father in law did when he fleed Lebanon after he ruined the country??

Hugo, I sure hope he's not gonna solve the electricity problem like he solved the cell phone problem, he did such a wonderful job the cost of the individual call went down.. but the overall bill went up because WE'RE HAVING TO CALL TWICE TO FINISH ONE CONVERSATION!

ONE stupid thing i disagree with the electricity draft law. tayyeb we know we have the issue of no electricity all the time. ya 3amme before receiving billions, and before setting plans to provide 24/7 electricity service dont you think it would make more sense to deal with electricity theft and the money used to fund it without being in debt before we make that move ? i hate to say that bassil is another one of these crooks who wants to pocket a couple mills inot his pocket and his uncles then the rest wll just buy a shipment of fuel to still have the same crisis. I am sick of reading the news as it is just a bunch of little kids running around in a playground asking for candy unfortunately our parliament has become a victim of this recess so is our dearly beloved legitimate cabinet

once again march 14 people here shouting about blindly,

@shab, I'm allll for green power, but no country in the world will have that established before any guarantee power stations running under the hood first, you build the power factories first which would provide enough time and power to build the green stations then you think of reducing the main power stations functions per hours/day.

give this man what he wants at the very least he is planning to build the stations seriously and giving dates and times of when it will start functioning, what stations have the march14 built during their recent leadership? none to my knowledge, its a shame, today people's lives and businesses depend on this power, this and the internet should be top priorities! seriously what the hell is 1.2 billion! , its D*mn pocket money! hell they threw away thrice that amount blindly over some joke of a tribunal! talk about true corruption felt on people's skins including mine as an everyday citizen!

Thumb will_rogers 19 August 2011, 17:56

Hey you MORON, why don't you show some "Preliminary Engineering Proposals" showing what you plan on Accomplishing !!! Or is it that you already know the Plan along with your LUNATIC, NARSISTIC Father-in-Law, From the Treasury to your POCKETS.

Better yet Why don't you make your "Snuggle Buddies" Hizbustan PAY for a small Percentage of the Electricity that they have been STEALING since the 70's and I bet it'll amount to more than $1.2 Billion, let them pay first, you can build all the plants you want with that money. Why should the Taxpayers give you $$$, for you to steal and for your Hizbustan Friends to Keep Stealing Electricity.

It'd be a lot wiser and less of a strain on us economically if the project was funded privately

Shab & hiram of tyre... Why don't you read the plan that was approved by saad hariri when he was pm. Saad hariri praised the plan that bassil presented and his cabinet approved which is exactly the same as this one. Instead of blindly complaining about the 1st plan to truly bring lebanon out of darkness, read and research the plan before barking! It's not completely your fault because naharnet refuses to publish the plan so that people can make an informed judgment.

The plan calls for new solar & wind plants and upgrading the existing hydro plants. it calls for dismantling of the oil plants in jounieh and construction of more efficient gas fired plants. It also calls for the opening and renovation of the 2 refineries and zahleh power plants, and the upgrading of the power line delivery stations!

Nothing at all wrong with this plan, and you should all be ashamed with those playing politics to restrict the people receiving electricity!

Default-user-icon HtotheK (Guest) 19 August 2011, 19:24

Jebran! do you seriously think they will let you fix the electricity problem???and who will pay their MAFIA ROYALTIES if the privately owned generators get shot down once we have power 24 hours/day? Also they couldn't fix it with >$55BILLION!!! if you do it with $1billion how do you think it will make them look???

Default-user-icon ma hada ado (Guest) 19 August 2011, 19:48

More fertilizers from ado and Bassil, the plan approved by the previous government had the ministry and the cabinet in charge of the funds not Bassil that's why even his allies are against it. Anyways he will probably put his wife's company in charge of yet another feasibility study.

Missing hiram-of-tyre 19 August 2011, 19:55

ado.australia...
It would be better is you read the post and understood what was mentioned.
I said it would be better to think about green energy instead of oil and gas.

From the plan that I didn't read:
"Lebanon’s primary energy source will be gas procured from the region (Turkey, Russia, Syria) and possible directly off Lebanon’s coast."
"Work should begin immediately on a 1500MW power plant "

It mentions studying solar power, not adopting it...

Please keep your comments decent unless your kind can only communicate in insults.
