Prime Minister Najib Miqati commended on Monday the army for its efforts in maintaining security in Lebanon, stressing that all sides should protect the army and security forces from any meddling.

He said after holding talks with Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji: “The military institution is above the political disputes and everyone should address it based on that position.”

“The army is the guarantee for Lebanon’s security, stability, freedom, and prosperity,” he added.

“After my visit to the South last month, it became clear to me that the army does not derive its strength strictly from its arms, but above all else from national unity and the people’s support,” continued Miqati.

“Developments in Lebanon have demonstrated that the army has overcome all internal and sectarian disputes,” he said.

The prime minister later held talks with U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly on local developments and bilateral relations.
