Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi held talks with French Ambassador Denis Pietton in Bkirki on Wednesday despite the diplomat’s announcement that his government was “disappointed” by al-Rahi’s remarks on Syria and Hizbullah’s arms.

The National News Agency said Bishop Samir Mazloum attended the talks.

Pietton left Bkirki without making any statement.

Bkirki sources told the Kuwaiti al-Anbaa daily on Tuesday that al-Rahi is demanding an apology from Pietton before setting a date to meet him.

The patriarch rejects the ambassador’s criticism of al-Rahi’s statements and “will not meet him unless he makes an apology and provides an explanation on his remarks about French disappointment” from the prelate, the sources said.

During his visit to Paris, al-Rahi said Syrian President Bashar Assad should be given the chance to introduce reform over his fear that the collapse of the regime would lead to the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood to power in Syria. This would constitute a threat to Christians in the region.

Al-Rahi also linked the fate of Hizbullah’s weapons to the liberation of the remaining Israeli-occupied Lebanese territories.

Thank you Mr Patriarch for dividing the Lebanese people more then what they are already divided. It's good to see you are also trying to drive away Lebanon biggest supporters away. You are a great example, keep up the good work.

God bless the batrak! Will France defend the christains in Syria when the Muslim (Sunni extremist) brotherhood takes over Syria? When Syria falls into civil war and the christains are slaughtered like they were after iraq's "liberation", will they step in to defend them? when they chant "alawie bill taboot and massesiehy lil Beirut." will they defend them? I dont think so.... The batrak is also the patriarch of the Maronites and christains in Syria, not just Lebanon. He only asked for peaceful negotiations and giving Assad a chance to implement the reforms that he promised.

This is also the view of the vatican. Accept it and apologise for trying to incite violence!

same old trick: shake the fear of the mean barbarian muslim to fanatize people and brain wash them...
reminds me of hitler who said that all the bad things happening to germany was because of the jews...

when you watch the syrian news, when have you seen mean muslims march and kill everyone? by news i m saying the official assad syrian tv!
i have seen women children and unarmed men demonstrating for freedom...

even that little puppet general wanted the syrian regime to fall, why now is he defending them?
because they are protecting israel from any incident in the golan? because they are backing the hezb who is doing the job that they are afraid to do? because they are backing their allies in lebanon to keep the syrian presence here in an indirect way and continue to steal the country unpunished?

syria is backed by israel, otherwise the usa and france would have intervene a long time ago!!!!
so those defending syria are also indirectly defending israel!!!
