Bassil Heads FPM as Alain Aoun Expresses Dismay in Electoral Process

The Free Patriotic Movement reached an agreement on Thursday for Jebran Bassil to be elected as its president.

Bassil, who is also the country's foreign minister, will succeed his father-in-law MP Michel Aoun as chief of the FPM.

Aoun will meanwhile select the vice presidents of the party, revealed LBCI television.

The elections were held during an extraordinary meeting for the FPM.

Aoun declared before the movement's members: “The agreement over the elections was based on the will of the majority.”

“I bless this decision and encourage it,” he added, while hoping that the members will be loyal to each other.

After the announcement, MP Alain Aoun, who was running in the election, issued a statement, saying: “I was seeking in this race to present my vision of the leadership of the movement for the upcoming phase.”

“I sought to present what I thought was best and most appropriate for the FPM based on the experience of the past ten years and what challenges we may expect in the future,” he added.

“Ever since the launch of the electoral campaign however, matters have veered off their desired course and it emerged that the necessary conditions to protect the democratic elections were lacking, which is a dangerous omen of division that may threaten the unity of the FPM in the post-elections stage,” added the lawmaker.

“Based on MP Michel Aoun's wishes, my constant confidence in him, and my awareness of the impact on the unity of the FPM, given the major political pressure it is under, I urge on all to overcome this phase and continue on working together for the interest and future of the movement,” he concluded.

Setting the example and leading the way in practicing democracy! Aoun appoints his son in law as head of the party and states he will also appoint the vice presidents of the party.

Fortunately, the FPM's internal charter does not require the head of the party to be taller than 140 cm.

Thumb freedomarch 20 August 2015, 19:51

But but Alian was taller by only 1 cm, that is nit fair at all

Gemayel, Jumblatt, Aoun, Geagea, Berri, Murr, Frangieh, Hariri and (insert generic sunni leader from Tripoli)... is this the modern day or 1970/80/90s Lebanon?

Remove the Palestinians and Syrians, and maybe we have a chance... YA WATTAN, YA LIBNAN!

Yeh... Seniora doesn't travel to Riyadh or Paris to get instructions from Saadadine Hariri.
Sami Gemayel won the Kateab elections. Samir Geagea won the LF elections and Dory Chamoun won the his elections!

I actually like Sami Gemayel but there is no difference between his election and the election of Gebran Bassil! Just like Nabil Berri won the "election" for the Amal movement!

All the same

Thumb ado.australia 20 August 2015, 19:15

A thief is now officially the head of the FPM.

Thumb -phoenix1 20 August 2015, 19:05

I believe that the Claoun has made a strategic mistake again, (what else? Has he ever been capable of one good decision?). Even though I have NO affinity towards the FPM and this because of the liar Claoun, still, it won't stop me from saying that Alain Aoun would have been one good successor to Aoun. Alain is educated, moderate and is fully capable of open and honest dialog with everyone, byt opting for the dwarf Gebran, the FPM will get even more dwarfed. Time to wrap up the party stage, the FPM is now hitting on the last nails of its coffin.

Thumb lebnanfirst 21 August 2015, 20:28

Agreed. All the BS about democratic election and it ends up in this maskhara outcome!
Then again this is not the first and worst mistake Aoun did, that was when he transcended his own former correct political views and allied himself with none other than Hizbullah!?!?

Thumb -phoenix1 20 August 2015, 19:07

And for those who ever thought of Aoun being the leader they felt could have been Brezident of Lebanon, now you see what a feudal lord he is? Yalla, kebbo 7elkoun bil ba7ar, afdal.

Thumb canadianpaul 20 August 2015, 19:08

Wow! Alain Aoun must have been close to winning that Claoun had to intervene personally and make an "appointment". So much for democracy, when the midget fails in the parliament elections and fails in his own party's elections, yet gets chance after chance to "lead".

5 cent bet that 2 years after Aoun's disappearance, the midget will be as "known" as Fares Boueiz is remembered today.

Thumb beiruti 20 August 2015, 19:20

This is Aoun's idea of democracy. He deems that his son in law has enough support and so he "blesses" the election that never really happened.

For those who really didn't like the FPM, this is the beginning of the end of our misery. This thing will fracture and fall apart as the FPM zilm start looking for the exit and a new giddo to follow around who will feed them and give them patronage.

70 cars, then 35, 1200 participants, a Aoun insulting and derogative as ever means one thing, the undoing of the FPM. He the Claoun will never, ever see the presidency of the republic, his in law Roukoz has been barbecued by none other than his sick dad in law, this is the sad end of the FPM, of a mad leader and of sheep followers. What is even more sad is this: If Aoun the Claoun chose an intelligent person who had one single iota of decency and integrity, then one could forgive the grumpy old man, but considering that the FPM had, and I repeat HAD, moderate, intelligent, educated, decent and capable people like Alain Aoun to name a few, Aoun's decision confirms what we always knew of the Caporal, that he never was capable and never will be capable of making or taking one single wise decision. Allah yer7amak ya Claoun.
