Ghosn Warns to Stage General Strike to Defend 'People's Right to Eat'

Head of the General Labor Confederation Union Ghassan Ghosn warned to stage a general strike to defend what he called "people's right to eat."

He called for a mass turnout in a Union-led battle to be launched mid-January.

Ghosn, in remarks published Thursday by al-Liwaa newspaper, said the Union plans to gradually step up its campaign to reach demonstrations and a general strike.

"The action is a purely a Union action far from any political objectives," he stressed.

Ghosn said the action aims to alleviate the suffering of the people.

He pointed out that the year 2010 was the worst social situation in Lebanon.
