FPM rallies in support of Ghada Aoun as Bassil slams 'corrupt establishment'
The Free Patriotic Movement staged a rally overnight after the judiciary’s disciplinary council decided to expel Mt. Lebanon Prosecutor Judge Ghada Aoun over alleged violations related to her judicial work.
The National News Agency said FPM supporters rallied outside Higher Judicial Council chief Judge Suheil Abboud’s house in the Keserwan town of Ballouneh, in support of Judge Aoun and in rejection of what they called an “arbitrary and unfair ruling” against her.
Commenting on the decision, ex-president Michel Aoun tweeted that the “corruption mafia” is trying to “destroy the judiciary.”
“Ghada Aoun’s cause is the cause of every Lebanese whose lifesavings have been robbed,” the former president added.
FPM chief Jebran Bassil for his part accused the “establishment of corruption” of “conspiring against the upright judge who does not take instructions from anyone.”
Judge Aoun has since appealed against the decision and said she was being targeted because she dared to investigate cases of corruption that others do not.
