French FM says Lebanon ceasefire proposal still on table, blames Hezbollah for war

The French-U.S. proposal for a ceasefire to end fighting in Lebanon remains on the table, with parties continuing to work on it, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Monday during a visit to Israel.

He said Israel’s security cannot be guaranteed with military force alone and will require a diplomatic solution.

“Military success cannot be a substitute for a political perspective,” Barrot told reporters.

“To bring the hostages home to their loved ones, to allow the displaced to return home in the north, after a year of war, the time for diplomacy has come,” he added.

Barrot said Hezbollah bears significant responsibility for dragging Lebanon into a war with Israel.

"In Lebanon, violence threatens to plunge a very fragile country into lasting chaos, threatening Israel's security even more than today," Barrot said, adding that "Hezbollah bears a heavy responsibility for this situation, having dragged Lebanon into a war that it did not choose".

All the French Foreign Minister has to do is persuade the Government of Lebanon to get Hizballah to withdraw across the river and lay down their arms.

Barrot parrots Macron who has been, is, and will be unable to deliver a diplomatic solution to Lebanon's problems .. the fighting between Hezbollah and Israel is just the latest in the list of haven't been able to get to an agreement between the two protagonists .. No one cares if the diplomats agree if all they are doing is admiring what they see in the mirror.

Why do you ignore two agreements that were reached between Lebanon and Israel.
1. May 1983 an agreement was reached, but the then Syrian occupiers tore it up. Why has no Lebanese Government since then approached the Israelis to re-instate that agreement, or prepare a new one?
2. Just a couple ogf years ago Israel and Lebanon agreed on the maritime border, why couldn't they continue and reach an agreement on the lanbd border?

Macron is discussing a ceasefire of weeks -- that is meaningless. Israel wants a ceasefire -- but one of decades. That is meaningful. Lebanon will never agree to that since its stated goal is the destruction of Israel.
