Lebanon-Israel ceasefire efforts: Latest developments
Hezbollah has informed the relevant parties, specifically Speaker Nabih Berri, who is tasked with negotiating with U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein, that it agrees to a 60-day truce in Lebanon and a full and comprehensive implementation of Resolution 1701, MTV reported Wednesday evening.
"Hezbollah has agreed to separate Lebanon's front from Gaza's and to move its weapons from the southern border area to the area north of Litani," MTV said.
It added that Lebanese officials have agreed to put Beirut's airport and port and the eastern and northern border with Syria exclusively under the supervision of the Lebanese Army, which would "monitor and guarantee that no arms are entering Lebanon."
Berri meanwhile told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper that Lebanon will not accept to "change a single letter in Resolution 1701" and that the ball now is in the court of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israel's Channel 12 for its part said that Netanyahu has "expressed his approval of a settlement in Lebanon that would guarantee the safe return of Israelis to their towns."
Israel's Walla news portal meanwhile quoted senior Israeli officials as saying that Israel and the U.S. have reached "preliminary understandings regarding the principles for a political settlement to end the war in Lebanon."
A senior Israeli official said that Israel and the U.S. "see eye to eye" on the principle that "an agreement will first be reached and only then will the ceasefire begin." The Israeli official estimated that it would take "several weeks" to reach an agreement.
"During the discussion convened by Netanyahu yesterday with several ministers and senior officials of the defense establishment, the principles for a political settlement in Lebanon were approved. Senior Israeli officials said that during the discussions there was agreement that the ground operation in Lebanon is very close to being exhausted and therefore a political settlement should be sought," Walla reported.
Cyprus' president meanwhile said that it is possible to reach a ceasefire in Lebanon within a week or two.
If such an agreement comes into existence it is certain that it never would have happened had Israel not invaded Lebanon to stop Lebanese rocket fire into Israel.
MTV was established in 1991 as a TV channel that sought to cater to the complexity and richness of its Lebanese viewers’ identity by creating a balanced mix of local, Arab, and western media content, with a special emphasis on producing local programming that is tailored to its audience and reflects their aspirations and values.
In addition to its unique approach to programming, MTV also led the way in terms of its adoption of self-regulation and a clear code of ethics, in a country where the media sector is completely unregulated, thus becoming the first station to abide by international best practices while legally acquiring foreign formats and rights-to-air
Probably Israel is killing people in Gaza, whom "nobody" cares about, to teach a lesson to Lebanon: that racism will last for a thousand years and Lebanon had better not get rid of Article 24's set-aside of half of Parliamentary seats to Christians. The same goes for Gulf monarchs.
"Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed more than 42,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants but says more than half of those killed were women and children. Israel says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence." NPR in the USA, essentially an Israeli mouthpiece, but getting uncomfortable.
Isn't it interesting that only yesterday the UN declared that over 500,000 had been killed in the war which has been going on in Sudan. Despite that this is the same UN which condemns the deaths of well less than 10% of that total in Gaza, there has never been a Sec-Cncl meeting about Sudan, no condemnations of Sudan government, and of course no huge demonstations in cities around Europe or university campuses in the US. There can only be one expanation for this, none of the anti-semites, including the UN SecGen, can blame the Jews or Israel for what is going on in Sudan, so it is of no interest to them.
