Salam calls on Souaid to abide by government's financial policy

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced Thursday that he did not support the appointment of Karim Souaid as central bank chief for “a host of reasons,” including “keenness on protecting depositors’ rights and preserving the state’s assets.”

“I voiced reservations over his appointment, along with a number of ministers,” Salam said after a Cabinet session in which Souaid received 17 votes out of 24.

“Any governor must abide by the financial policy of our reformist government as expressed by the ministerial statement, in terms of negotiating on a new program with the International Monetary Fund, restructuring banks, and devising a complete plan according to the best international standards to preserve depositors’ rights,” Salam added.

He also said that the government has approved a draft law aimed at amending the banking secrecy law.

“This is our policy and the governor must abide by it. The Lebanese have asked us for reform and we insist on reform,” Salam went on to say.

Salam messed up with his veiled accusations of Souaid. It is the Prime Minister’s own friends in “kulluna 2irada” who are pushing for the scrapping off all the money owed to the depositors and starting over by creating new banks. By his allegation Nawaf is really targeting President Joseph Aoun because he insisted on Karim Souaid instead of Nawaf Salam’s choice, Firas Abi-Nassif, uncle of Marie-Joe Abi-Nassif, the PM’s daughter in law. This is the behavior of someone of low character.

There's a reason yet again I am in favor of scrapping the post of PM in any new government structure whenever that happens. I prefer an Executive Present style type of government.

So he has reservation about state assets. of he does, cause that's where all the cronies steal the people's tax money. The over bloated bureaucrats and over bloated public employees who do nothing.

In am big proponent of privatizing state industry with a government body for oversight so that these new ones will not monopolize and take advantage of the public. Better services and competition will bring much lower prices.
